we were here a couple of times ago and chose it because of its location and character. it is an old pub, built in 1611 and located in a charming village not far from the a303. we had a double room with views of the garden, with a wash basin and a communal bath. it was very clean and comfortable. the host are welcoming and friendly. the food was excellent, we had the special, roasted sea bass with roasted new carrots,... What tibbyelmwood doesn't like about The White Lion Inn:
We popped in recently for a quick drink having heard that this pub was open again. The pub was really smokey (the open fire had had a problem for a few days which was still unfixed). The pub was really cold. A lot of the furniture was missing so it lacked a cosy atmosphere. The white wine was acidic. They poured me another, which was just as bad so we left. Huge room for improvement and such a shame this place has go... View all feedback.
The menu is unimpressive and the restaurant looks like it needs a renovation. We waited thirty minutes for our food in a nearly empty restaurant, and one of our orders, the seafood ploughman's, was uncooked. It came with a cheap partially baked baguette. The burger we ordered was tiny, possibly only 2 ounces. It seems like the quality has declined, as they used to have meat supplied by Robinsons butchers. I would not recommend this place or return. It was disappointing. Perhaps they should consider serving a smaller menu with higher quality dishes if they are struggling with costs.
Unwelcoming. Food was so dire, all of us left at least half the meal. I left 3/4. Beer was cloudy, and didn’t finish it. Such a shame as it used to be a great place to visit.
The White Lion has recently reopened under new management. On arrival you are sure to receive a warm welcome. The food is excellent with a good variety to choose from and won’t hit your pocket as hard as many other pubs in the area. I would highly recommend a visit.
We have been using the White Lion for Sunday lunches for a number of years now and were due to eat there this Friday which was a change from our normal day. Have now discovered that the people running the pub are retiring. We shall miss the excellent service, hearty meals, ales and drinks in general. Such a shame the people are retiring but we wish them all the very best for the future and trust the new owners will continue the tradition. Kind regards Philip Hill and the ex-Weymouth crew
Absolutely fantastic place to stay and to eat. Excellent accommodation, superb food and beer and the service is fantastic. Can’t rate this pub/restaurant highly enough, thank you for a great night and happy retirement to you both.
