Description

Half And Half in Te Awamutu is a small, often charming spot with occasional standout dishes—beef Wellington, risotto and fries earn praise—yet experiences vary wildly. Service ranges from attentive and warm to slow or sullen, and kitchen inconsistencies produce long waits, missing components and uneven quality. Prices lean premium for the area; when it clicks the atmosphere is lively and welcoming, but inconsistent execution makes visits hit-or-miss.

The quality of the dishes was exceptional. Every bite was a delightful explosion of flavors that highlighted the skill of the talented chefs. From starters to desserts, each course was carefully crafted and elegantly presented.

The menu was enticing, and we were both drawn to the Beef Wellington, as it’s not often found on menus nowadays. While our meal was being prepared, we enjoyed some good conversation over glasses of Chardonnay. They offer wine by the glass in either 150ml or 250ml, or you can opt for a bottle if you prefer. When our Beef Wellingtons arrived, they were nothing short of exceptional. The quality was top-notch, and both the presentation and portion sizes were impressive. I couldn’t finish mine, so I happily took half home in a takeaway container. For dessert, we savored affogato and crème brûlée, both of which we loved. The crème brûlée was particularly delightful, featuring chunks of Whittaker’s chocolate beneath a luscious passionfruit layer, topped with a berry compote. The music added to the pleasant ambiance, and all the elements combined for a truly enjoyable evening. The total bill came to $180, which we felt was very reasonable given the quality of the food, the delightful wines, and the overall experience provided by the establishment. We also had the pleasure of chatting with the owner and his wife, which added a personal touch to the evening. To top it off, we were treated to complimentary glasses of Baileys to celebrate my husband’s birthday—a very thoughtful gesture. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening and highly recommend this delightful restaurant. Don’t forget to take a moment to chat with the owner; he’s a genuine gentleman dedicated to offering a memorable culinary experience, embodying the essence of traditional hospitality. Thank you!

Not good, not cheap and not fast. I’m happy with only two of those things, and we didn’t get one. Must’ve had a lot of mates post positive reviews. Very disappointing and not up to their premium prices. Service: Dine in Price per person: NZ$30–40
