We visited on a Wednesday, which meant the visitor center was closed. However, even when the center is closed, there’s plenty to see that makes the trip worthwhile. Park at the bottom of the hill and take a walk to the lighthouse. There are outdoor plaques that provide information about the lighthouse and its history. The views are stunning, and you'll be able to see numerous seabirds. Enjoy your visit! View all feedback.
Absolutely fantastic. The road has lots of traffic (and remember, these are NOT designated parking spots!). Be cautious of freely roaming sheep. Travel slowly and take your time to enjoy the stunning views. The scenery is spectacular and truly makes you feel like you’re on the edge of the world. This is the season for puffins, but they seem to be away from their nesting areas at the moment. However, there are plenty of fulmars around.
Sumburgh Head is an amazing location for bird photography, especially for photographing puffins. We visited several times, and each visit left us in awe. The views of Shetland's South Mainland are breathtaking. The hike from the parking lot to the lighthouse is a bit challenging, but it’s definitely worth it. There’s a café nearby, although we noticed that many items were unavailable during our visit in June.
I had a fantastic experience that was absolutely worth the entrance fee. There was so much to see and do! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the views made the effort to get there more than worthwhile.

This is a fantastic spot for birdwatching! Fortunately, during my visit, the puffins on the land and at the cliff edge were only a few meters away. It was also fascinating to explore the lighthouse and see the equipment used to power the foghorn. The walk from public parking is quite steep, but there are a few disabled parking spaces available at the top for those with mobility challenges.
