What Don R doesn't like about Missouri Hick Bbq South:
Low 3/5. I want to like this place more but the brisket is chopped and the turkey is sliced deli thin and is always dry. My ribs were inedible this time though last visit I liked them. My server was awesome and I'm sure if you hit this place at just the right time it can be pretty good for what it is, but there's no way this is award winning bbq as per the billboards. By far an amazing bbq spot. All types of sauces and meals to choose from. Big filling portions. Service was fabulous. Great cute decor. Great to take out of town eta visiting. Only 15 mins from our Airbnb.
Now I know MO Hicks is known for their amazing smoked meats. Not so long ago I too was going GAGA over their ribs! I've stopped eating meat for the most part, so I wasn't sure how my next MO Hicks moment would be. Well they know what's up with Catfish! Dayummmmmm. Their Friday Fish Fry only $1 more than their basket and it's all the fish you can eat. But my first serving were two filets as big as my face and that was all she wrote. We love their little side salads (not included) and coleslaw (included) too. Oh and their hush puppies are delicious y'all. Soooo good. I still get down with their sauce. When I lived in NV my wife and I would order a case at a time. It's nice to be 7 miles down the road now and be able to get sauced any time I want!!
I hate to leave a negative review for somewhere with such delicious food. But unfortunately, our experience isn't based on the food in this case. We visited Mo Hick around 7:00ish on 3/7/24, had a wonderful dinner. Our food was great, our waitress was friendly and helpful. After dinner we were trying to get out of their hair so they could get cleaned up and get ready for closing. On our way out, we noticed that the exterior lights that were on when we came in, were now turned off, though they were still open and still had other customers inside. We even commented how dark it was. As we are walking out the front entrance, not even 15 feet from the front door, my mother trips over a parking curb, which was not painted yellow, no reflective strip, nothing. My 65 year old mother fell to the ground to the wet pavement in pain. My sister immediately went inside for ice, the staff in front was slow to get it, but did eventually realize what was going on, and they grabbed the ice and came outside to check. The girls who came out were very friendly, trying to joke after seeing my mother was responsive. They quickly retreated back inside though. Did not offer much service other than the ice. My mother tripped over a curb that was not properly painted, in the dark. She broke her ankle, and bruised herself up pretty bad. The next day, I emailed MO Hick to let them know what had happened. Not to ask for anything, except for them to consider keeping their lights on until they close, because apparently, they knowingly turn them off close to closing time, to prevent others from coming inside, and to recommend painting their curbs safety yellow. This could have happened to someone much older and much more fragile. Instead, I got no response. And when my mother called and asked to speak to the manager, she was only met with complete disrespect and hatefulness. This is when they told her they purposely turn the lights off. And that they would be responding to my email. It is now 2 weeks later and we have not heard anything. Which is what is leading to my review. My family will not dine somewhere that does not care about their customers or about their safety wellbeing. They lost an entire family of customers.
These people are some real Dumb A--es. They have billboards on the highway A few miles before the exit claiming to have room for semi truck parking. Today I was bobtailing, didn't have a trailer with me. Well He'll you can't even get a bobtail unit in this very small lot let alone a full semi truck! I was very upset because wanted to try some good BBQ. Well I can't, instead have to go to the crappy TA down the road. I guess it's just as well they call themselves Hick since that is what they are! Hey Hick, take down those billboards because that's false advertising.
Really good bbq spot in n a real life small Missouri town. Stop in Cuba MO for a quick bit or full on dinner. An old southern setting with all wood and varnish tables warm and inviting. Even the restroom is an old style outhouse feel. Tables set up with a choice of five different style bbq sauces run the gamut from sweet mild to spicy sweet heat. Few frills and all thrills in the traditional sense, the menu is straightforward from pulled pork to brisket. Generous size portion's with chips, pickle and a side choice. I did an Ory's Special 50/50 brisket/pulled pork Sammy and loaded it with left bbq sauce excellent choice. My buddy knocked off s brisket dinner. The best part of the meal was the service as the two girls working on this Monday afternoon were a class act. Both super friendly warm and inviting to a coupla fish outta water city boys. Nothing makes a good meal great like great hospitality.
