Graben Gritsch Heuriger Winery - Spitz

We stopped here for a relaxing glass of wine. We were greeted very kindly and given good wine suggestions. Service was very good.

We were enticed to drive all the way to Viessling to find this Winery cum "Heuriger" - a "Heuriger" is a place where you can have the winemakers' wines and some food - because we found it in a reputable local wine guide, listed as one of the top winemakers of the Wachau at reasonable prices. The first surprise was: This little place is located in a small village which is situated in a steep valley, and the entire village is labyrinthine - we drove around for a while to find it. Well, after we finally found it, it turned out to be located in a spectacular site, overlooking the valley. Second surprise: The winemaker himself poured the wine, and his wife cooked. We sampled the white wine "Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Schön 2013" and it indeed was just stunning. A full-bodied white with character and depth. We purchased 12 bottles to take home. Food: We had salmon trout with asparagus, on pasta. Most delicious. Tiramisu with apricots as dessert, also convincing. The third surprise of this place is: You get to sit outdoors on the most stunning patio, overlooking the valley. As the evening went on, the winemaker again joined us, and we were feeling like being taken up into the family. He poured his latest creation, a sparkling wine - crisp, dry, with cedar wood notes. Also notable: The apricot jam that is homemade and can be purchased. Fragrant and aromatic. A word of caution: A "Heuriger" is not licensed to be open during the entire year. You need to look up their website for opening days. But the trip is well worth it. We will certainly be back again.

Schöne Lage mit Blick in die Weinberge und die Ruine Hinterhaus. Große Auswahl an Aufstrichen, Salaten, Aufschnittplatten und Mehlspeisen. Es werden (leider) ausschließlich kalte Speisen angeboten, was für einen Heurigen üblich ist. Mittlerweile findet man aber bei dem einen oder anderen Heurigen auch schon warme Gerichte auf der Karte, worüber ich mich immer sehr freue. Vegetarier und Veganer werden auf der Speisekarte dankenswerterweise auch fündig. Sitzplätze nur auf 6-er oder 8-er Tischen möglich. Service flott, korrekt aber nicht überschwänglich. Alles in allem sehr ok. Ich persönlich hätte mich über etwas mehr Herzlichkeit gefreut.
