Fantastic Friday fish fry. Is it cod or haddock or flake? Very delicate batter. Fried dill pickles wow and amaze as well. As wife says, it is not amazing...
Yes I did. ..went to the Farr side because I thought with a name like that it must be an interesting place and I wanted to have some lunch. To digress... I have previously been to Spillville visiting the clock museum. At that time, could not find a place to eat, but we were looking for breakfast and this place was likely not open. This time, I found it in an online search. It is located right on the town square , which must be one of the first one way roundabouts in the midwest. I arrived on a Saturday at noon and there were only three other people in the place and all sitting at the bar. I sat at the bar as well. When asked by the dour-faced sever what I wanted, I said, do you have coffee? (the others were drinking beer). She said NO! I politely asked, well can you make some? She gave me a very stern look and walked away, like I had asked for the moon. She did not come back for at least 10 minutes (I guessed she was brewing coffee in the back). She brought the coffee out and it was then I noticed there was an empty coffee maker right nearby (more about this later). She filled a cup for me. 15 minutes later she came back and asked if I wanted anything else. I said, yes I will have the Philly Steak Swiss Sandwich . I think she was the only person working there, I saw no one else. So she was the cook, server, bartender and I assume dishwasher as well. Possibly this was why she was not very pleasant, but heck there were only 3 other customers, not like it was busy. Before I received my order, another guy walked in to pick up a to-go order. He had his order within 3 minutes. I had to wait about 30 minutes to eat. The sandwich served on toasted white bread was not too bad for $5.25. However, I was charged $2.50 for a cup of coffee. Remember the coffee pot nearby I mentioned? After I got my sandwich, she said, there is more coffee over there and help yourself if you want more Then I saw the sign by the coffee pot that said, coffee is only $1.50, please pay the bartender . I guess for causing trouble and asking for coffee, I had to pay an extra $1.00. She never brought me the tab, so I just put a $10 bill in front of me. When she came by, she grabbed it and brought back change, never saying another word. I left the remainder as a tip, which she really never respectfully earned. This place does get 3 stars for the ambiance. It is a dive bar, no doubt, but I enjoyed all the decor, nostalgic posters, signs, photos and memorabilia. Whomever put up all the fun stuff on the walls, has a great sense of humor. I am betting it was not my server.
Good food, good drinks, great people like Cheers! always welcoming where everyone knows your name!
