Although this charming town is no longer directly on the highway, it is definitely worth taking a few extra kilometers to visit. The coffee and food at the quaint old shop are excellent, and the decor adds to the lovely atmosphere. South Johnstone, named after the river running through it, is still home to a functioning sugar mill that keeps the local pub bustling. In addition, there is a fantastic organic goods store and a top-notch butcher that specializes in traditional smoked smallgoods. After enjoying your coffee, be sure to take a stroll around the town to explore all it has to offer.

I always turn off the Bruce Hwy and head to South Johnstone for a break at Off th Rails Cafe and Gallery. The food is always fresh and healthy. Great coffee. The staff are always lovely and accommodating.

Faaaantastic, this groovy little place is well worth a visit, delicious coffee and cake, take a friend visit often

Sometimes when you're travelling it's hard to keep your diet nutritious and delicious, because food for tourists isn't made that way. But sometimes, you get lucky. We were on our way to the eccentric Paronella Park when we saw the colourful old building in South Johnston, a small community nestled amongst the cane fields.Advertising itself as a vegetarian, slow food place, it offered what I'd been craving.Don't expect it to take a long time, don't expect it to be very expensive. Just expect very tasty, well presented food in a relaxed environment. We had spinich pie, red lentil soup, juice, coffee, and cake for dessert. All good. If you're visiting far North Queensland and want to eat well, this place is worth a visit.
