A nice change of pace! The German Chicken was delicious. I’ve never had a sweet/sour sauce like that before nor the way they served the cabbage on top. The staff was friendly. The German Chocolate Cake, fries, macaroni salad, and lasagna were also good. View all feedback.
What Stephen Spence doesn't like about Clay Haus:
I visited this establishment on recommendations of a friend, I was told they had some of the best friend chicken they had ever eaten, and if you visit on Sundays you can enjoy their Buffet, but unfortunately they no longer have a buffet, and the meal portions are not what I expected from a German/Pennsylvania Dutch style restaurant. The waiter explained that since Covid they found they were losing money with the buff... View all feedback.
Definitely historic. Little musty but not bad for old building. Food Definitely homemade. Got fish with German potato salad-great
This restaurant was recommended to me as an option for my Grandma's 90th birthday lunch as she had liked it in the past. I thought a traditional meal would be a good way for our family to bond and reminisce on a rare occasion where we could all to be together. The setting and atmosphere were fine, the service was adequate. The food was exceptionally terrible. The fried chicken was extremely over cooked, with practically no meat, with a breading that was not tasty at all. The mashed potatoes and gravy were thin and flavorless. The stuffing was a gooey mass with mediocre seasoning. The green beans were about what you'd expect from a can. I can't stress enough how devoid of redeeming qualities this meal was. As it was a birthday we were initially reluctant to be critical of the food, but as more of us began to voice our disappointment, the fact that we were all in complete agreement on the barely edible state of the meal allowed us to find some humor in the moment while we commiserated. I can't explain how the other reviews I see here are positive. Perhaps the restaurant happened to have had a 3rd grader standing in for the chef on the morning we arrived. I would have appreciated it if the staff had asked if we enjoyed the meal, but they did not.
One of the best burgers I've had in a while! Really nice slice of a small town.
Staff was super nice and attentive to us,the food was very good. Loved all the old fireplace and all of the decorations. A must see.
We arrived at a quaint rustic household setting, complete with a small fireplace and all sorts of antique bric a brac. We were greeted immediately by one of the most personable servers/hosts I have encountered in a long time. She had something positive to say about every dish. For the appetizer, we ordered the Reuben bites, expecting the usual deep fried egg rolls filled with Reuben meat, and were pleasantly surprised by tiny handmade empanadas, of sorts, filled with hand smoked and carved Ruben meat, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut, which was perfect. The corned beef in my wife's Reuben was lean and full of flavor, and our German potato salad was almost as good as what I make at home ; This was an extremely pleasant experience And it's a shame, really, since I live two states away. Clay Haus was a wonderful diversion from the usual restaurants. Absolutely recommended.
