Alta's Burger - Smith River
Alta's Burger
Description
Tucked into a small‑town double‑wide, this no‑frills diner serves generous, homemade breakfasts and made‑from‑scratch burgers with old‑fashioned charm. Portions are huge — think plate‑sized pancakes and fresh‑cut potatoes — and regulars praise the personable owner. Expect a cozy, living‑room atmosphere and great value, but be prepared: signage is minimal, service can be uneven, and the place is strictly cash‑only with no on‑site ATM. Best for big appetites, road trippers and fans of authentic home‑style cooking.

The cheese hamburger was excellent, and the service was great. The restaurant was clean, and the prices were reasonable. I will definitely eat here again. The breakfast menu also looked appealing.
I decided to try this restaurant (CASH ONLY) after reading some great reviews, and I’m so glad I did. I ordered a double cheeseburger, and I almost regretted it because it was enormous, accompanied by a generous serving of fries. You can really tell that the burger is handmade, with that delightful homemade flavor. It’s honestly the best burger I’ve had in years. The woman who runs the place is fantastic as well; if you’re friendly, she’ll return the good vibes and maybe even share some interesting stories. There are plenty of regulars who frequent the place, and I would be one of them if I lived even remotely nearby.
This cheeseburger was fantastic and had all the flavors you'd expect from a classic cheeseburger. The irregular shape of the patty clearly indicates that it's made from scratch, which adds to its charm. However, I'm giving a point deduction because they only accept cash—who carries cash these days?!
By far the best burger I have had in years. Definitely the best burger in Del Norte county. The place is great, clean and bright. The one thing missing was a good sign outside but look for the open sign in the window.
This is a rare find. I love this kind of place. No sign, no waitress, cash only, you bus your own table and its all locals inside. The food is pure American faire. Huge portions, fresh ingredients, cooked to perfection. Nothing fancy just damn good. If I'm on hwy 1 I'm stopping.
