I really enjoyed this restaurant and I will definitely be returning to try more sushi! Our favorite dishes were the special gurke, an appetizer, and the spinne roll, featured in the first and second photo. We also tried the isobe, an appetizer shown in the third photo. I personally wasn't a fan of it, but my companion thought it was okay. View all feedback.
What Clara Schoorman doesn't like about Sushi Masa:
on one hand, this is the only place in Sioux Falls you can get okonomiyaki. on the other hand, the entire business model of this establishment hinges on the manual dexterity of two elderly japanese people, so u better bring an ipad with a martin scorsese film on it because you are gonna be WAITING waiting. Get it before it's gone. This is the best cut of fish you can get anywhere in the Midwest. Certainly one of the best family-owned spots you can get to in the US.
If it was just based on food, this place would be top notch. But a respectable BUSINESS does not take an hour to serve 2 rolls. I came here an hour and 30 minutes before work and I kid you not when I had 20 minutes left to drive to work and my food still hasn’t come out, I was fed up and asked to leave. The entire time no updates, no refills on water. Literally felt put on the side while the bigger tables had the priority. I had asked to leave and pay for the only thing that came to my table which was an appetizer and the guy had the GAUL TO SAY THEY WERE ALMOST DONE WITH MY ORDER, THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR IT, AND PROCEED TO MAKE ME WAIT 10 MORE MINUTES LIKE THEY WERE TRYING TO SPEEDRUN THE ORDER. I had come a few times and noticed they only had 3 consistent employees, the elderly couple and a young man with glasses, perhaps a relative? Besides that employees serve a week and they are gone. Can’t find good help? Or the compensation isn’t enough? If you allow your customers to wait that long and STILL expect them to pay for a meal that I had to take which I didn’t want anymore because I was so pissed at trusting them to do things in a timely manner, I can’t imagine how you treat your employees.
This is the 25th anniversary of Sioux Falls’, first Japanese restaurant. It’s the only authentic Japanese restaurant in town, owned by Japanese people. For the life of me, I can’t understand why someone would go to a Japanese restaurant owned by Chinese or Thai. Would you go to an Italian restaurant owned by Egyptians? Compared to my home state of Florida, this place is super inexpensive. The fish is actual sushi grade, flown in from Miami. I’ve only been to this restaurant twice, in these many years, but it’s a gem. I wish it was in my town.
Legit Japanese Sushi. My wife is Japanese and she agrees this is the best sushi in Sioux Falls.
