Places like Meidi-ya make me want to move back to Singapore. This mainly Japanese supermarket sells a wide variety of products but the attraction to me is the fresh food selection which includes meat, fruit veggies, tofu (try the super fresh and non-sweetened soy milk... it's amazing) and cooked dishes. However the real star is the fish counter: they have the most amazing sashimi at reasonable prices. During my trip here I've had multiple portions of sashimi at various price levels in different restaurants and I can honestly tell you that the best one came out of the basement of Liang Court. I went on a Saturday at 10 am, right after they open and I found an amazing platter for 33$ which was filled with generous portions of perfectly sliced otoro, salmon, sweet shrimp and even a helping of sea urchin! This was the perfect combo for me, but no worries if you are not a fan of either fish, there is so much variation in their sashimi platters at different price points so you are bound to find one which suits your taste! How I wish we had a Meidi-ya in Europe so I could try more of their Japanese goodies and feast on their sashimi regularly.
I love this Japanese supermarket! My husband stumbled upon this supermarket while seeking out the sushi joint located right next door. For grab and go fresh sashimi, this place has a solid 5 stars by me. The case has a good selection of salmon and other fish (solid pieces and also cut that I think are reasonably priced. I paid $8SGD for about 10 good slices of high quality salmon. I also picked up a yummy five bean salad from their grab and go case (located in the store, on the right, near the back . From dairy to produce or an expansive selection of snacks to laundry soap, Meidi-Ya has it all! Mostly Japanese brands, but other global brands as well. This store is just a short 5-10 minute walk from the Clarke Quay MRT stop and easy to find (enter the Liang Court Shopping Center and head to the lower level via the escalator . Everything in the store is well stocked, organized, fresh and well displayed (those Japanese know the art of perfect pretty retail displays! . Be it simply to grab a meal in the mall and then be on a mission for specific things or simply to browse, I look forward to returning to Meidi-Ya regularly.
This is probably one of the best supermarkets in Singapore, assuming you have poor eyesight and you can't see prices too well. Well it's a given that prices are high here because everything is imported and of a good quality. I come here to buy things I can't find in my standard trusty NTUC Fairprice. One can find Japanese staple goods here, and they have a good selection of Japanese rice, noodles, sauces, produce, and Japanese-centred home products. But the real gems are stuff that regular supermarkets don't carry, like their great range of organic/Fairtrade/real chocolate bars, sake, and various snacks. One could easily spend 1-2 hours browsing here, and I'm glad they accept Amex. I came on a Saturday evening and it wasn't crowded. I really do love this place. I just can't afford to buy their fruit!

Their sashimi is also super fresh and I was delighted to see another japanese chef from a japanese restaurant, ordering shashimi over the counter right here. lol. :
This is the supermarket of my dreams. The girlfriend cooked up a four course japanese meal for the fam a couple weeks ago, and she picked up everything she needed here, including some tofu they made on premises. THEY MAKE THEIR OWN TOFU HERE. And soya bean milk. Oh, mother of soy products. On our previous visits, we've also picked up frozen baby eggplant, some super wagyu for shabu shabu, and a bunch of ridiculously cool sweets. This one time, at band ca what I meant was, we found this seasonal fruit jelly, that was THE BOMB. I did cost a pretty penny, but it WAS THE BOMB. We got the peach jelly (that had half a peach in it), the grape (with a half dozen skinned grapes in it) and a couple more that were just a dream... Just go. You'll find something to gawk at, and you'll buy it, and you'll marvel at how amazing it tasted. And you'll write a review like mine.
