I went to this restaurant for a meal and initially enjoyed the great service and food. However, my experience was tainted when the staff took a break and began using foul language and smoking while we were dining. They continued to swear loudly even when another family with a young child was present, which I found disrespectful.

It's a while since we last ate at The Black Lion and it will be an even longer time before we return. Calling for lunch we were told there would be a ten minute wait. Ten minutes? It was forty and there was only one other table being served in the dining room. We selected our meals. My husband chose from the vegetarian menu and received cold vegetables, and when he asked where the new potatoes were (he'd been given a dollop of mashed potatoes) was told they'd run out! My meal of tasteless scampi and seriously over cooked chips arrived looking brown and extremely unappetising there were no peas, they'd run out. There was no offer of a substitute and I suspect the overcooked chips could have been from the previous day. As the hotel is in a central position in the town and has the first restaurant encountered from the wharf this poor service and food lets the hotel down badly. Such a pity.

Had a great time, the food was good and there was a good selection of beers. Really lovely old building. Will come again.
