Weakfish At The Chequit

There are no advantages to staying at this place. There's no breakfast, no pool, and no beach access, not even a coffee maker in the room. Street parking is available, but good luck finding a spot. The summer house is outdated, with a tiny bathroom, ants in the room, and uneven floorboards. Only the main house has been updated. I recommend choosing one of the other hotels on the island instead.

Upon arrival, I found no one at the front desk. After a 15-minute wait and notifying the other staff, a woman who had been smoking on the deck came over and handed me a key. We proceeded to the Summer Hostel across the street. The rooms seemed to date back to 1870 or possibly even earlier, and they were far from what one might expect unless you are accustomed to living on the streets or in abandoned places. The decor pays homage to the prohibition era, with furnishings that reflect that theme. The lone chair and the refrigerator on the floor are interesting details, but not particularly practical. The bathroom is the size of a closet, and the blinds are broken. There are hardly any amenities to mention. I’m not quite sure who would find this appealing, but if you’re interested in “roughing it,” then this might be the right spot for you. Additionally, parking is a free-for-all, reminiscent of “prison rules”—you take what you can get, while you can. The next time I visit Shelter Island, I’d prefer to stay in a tent or my car instead.

We had dinner at the bar and ordered cocktails, but the staff seemed unsure of how to make a decent Long Island iced tea or a Bloody Mary; the latter tasted more like wasabi soup than anything else. The prices were exorbitant for the quality received, and overall, I wouldn't return here. On a positive note, the staff were attentive to our arrival, and check-in was quick and hassle-free. The towels were of good quality, the toiletries were from the Malin brand, and they provided two complimentary bottles of water. It’s a nice place to look at from the outside, but not worth the price for anything else.

Have been to the Tavern in the Chequit twice and have thoroughly enjoyed the food. Seated outside, six of us could easily converse, but seated inside, five of us had a terrible time hearing each other. While the renovations were pleasing to the eye,the acoustics were dreadful. Can't knock the food though; nice selection and delicious.

Great, weekend or weekday getaway. Ben and the staff showed us a great time. Definitely try the sushi bar or have some drinks by the firepit.
