While some dishes were tasteless and service slow, the overall experience was pleasant with exceptional service and a friendly staff. The restaurant provides a unique dining experience with delicious locally sourced dishes and a great wine selection. Some minor issues with breakfast aside, the food quality and menu choices were excellent. Overall, The Black Bull is a charming restaurant to enjoy innovative dishes and a cozy atmosphere.
The Black Bull is an eclectic merge of Japanese and British cuisine. It sort of works but at the same time always provides a menu which sometimes borders on the unnecessarily challenging. It can be a little pricey, the cheapest options are on a par with 2 AA rosette restaurants I have dined at, but otherwise you are looking at £30 for a main course. If you send your children to the nearby private Sedbergh school this is probably pocket change but for most, it makes this restaurant a touch pricey for what it offers.
Everything superb bar the flat iron steak. Seriously tough and difficult to cut even with a steak knife. I’m aware it’s a tricky cut that only allows minimal cooking but given how superb everything else was this was a real disappointment. Funny taste. Not really like steak at all. I couldn’t eat it.
Very friendly staff, very attentive. Delicious food and great local ale. Will definitely return
Wonderful food from the a la carte menu. We love their food. Like many establishments they are struggling to find good staff post Brexit. On this particular day they were under staffed so we had to wait a while. As it happened we weren’t in a rush and the food was worth waiting for.
The main restaurant is not open Monday or Tuesday. The reduced offer on those days in not that interesting or inspiring.
