Like any veterans organization, this hold place holds some truths to the beat up beliefs and assumptions but it so much more than that. For comparison, I'm 58 and served during the 90"s. Did not join until 2016. Was out driving around one night and saw this place and went in. Was greeted by Tommy, God Bless his soul, gave me the layout of the land and I knew I was home. I agree with some of the past postings that it can at times be unwelcome and a place for old fogies. You do need to be a member to walk in or have a member bring you in. And yes, you can then play bar bingo, yahtzee or Queen of Hearts or any of the other games and drink till you are out of money. The music is getting better and more relevant. Progress is slow when the membership is 70% Viet Nam vets. I love these vets but it's only natural that they like the music they like and the post run the way they like. Times change and so must the post if they want to survive long into the future. We want and need the younger under 40 vets to breath some life back into this post and keep it the Best Damn Post in the West.
My wife and I plus 14 of our good friends attended the 2020 Valentines Day celebration at this great American Legion Post. The buffet dinner included a prime rib station, salmon, vegis and dessert. The music was provided by Abby Ray and Sandi, they were excellent so we dance the night away! We had drinks, great food and wonderful music at an exceptionally low cost! The staff and members are welcoming and the title of the best in the West is well deserved!
God bless our older folks but this place is a nursing home. Same thing week in, week out. Same boring entertainment constantly. Veteran service organizations are dying and they wonder why. They also wonder why younger veterans are not joining. They will not change with the times. For the price of meals (which are good) and the entertainment there are many more options with value in Scottsdale. The American Legion is a great organization and do great work. I will choose to support veterans any way possible. However, I will not waste my time here.
