A stone ranch style on the water. I think it's the Kalamazoo River. Great service, great but limited food and fun ambience. The chicken was baked directly, not overpainted. We share a dinner and a few pages. My wife just grabbed the menu. View all feedback.
What Matt Muia doesn't like about The Southerner:
I made the grievous error of walking up to the hostess stand and asking for a table for four, when NOBODY else was in the restaurant, which then for whatever reason caused the hostess to roll her eyes. I’m sorry that I interrupted you to for the 35 seconds it took for you to add my name to the waitlist. Never again at this place. View all feedback.

What a beautiful, casual environment on the river Kalamazoo! Sit on the terrace and enjoy the view. Food suggestions: Try the pickle dip for an appetizer I don't like pickles and I loved it. The fried chicken AMAZING! Choose the cookies as one of your pages worth EVERY calories! Enjoy!
Here was recommended by a coffee barista in Grand Rapids. Wow. What a find! Very rarely do I find the woman a place where everything is delicious, but no longer say. I ordered the chicken dinner regularly (not sharp) with baked beans and biscuit. It was delicious. The best roasted chicken I had. Very plentiful. Beans were amazing and the cookie with honey butter (I would eat a whole dish of them. Amazing). My wife had the shrimps and grits w/ coleslaw and cookies. Everything was amazing. You have a bar to order a drink you wait and they were also good. An amazing find.
The fried chicken was so good! The meat is juicy and tasteful and the skin is beautiful and crispy. The Mac and the cheese were also amazing and so were the sides. The only complaint I have is that it is too popular!
I tend to write lengthy reviews, but there is no reason to do for The Southerner. The food here is excellent, the prices are fair and the cocktails are top-notch. Service is friendly and efficient. Be prepared to wait-this place can get quite popular during the summer months.
