I enjoyed this unusual restaurant right in the middle of Saskatoon. The decor is simple with objects from their African heritage. You feel like you have been invited into their home. It is a family run business with the casualness and peacefulness that I need when I go out. Mom cooks, dad and daughter take your order and help you with selections. We have been here as a couple and with a large group for a fund raising... View all feedback.
What Laverne Hill doesn't like about Saba's African Cuisine:
The food she served wasn't enough for the 4 of us and it didn't look fresh either. I told her that an Ethiopian restaurant in Winnipeg doesn't skimp on their customers. I have eaten there before and there wasn't a problem. When we walked in she was on a lounge chair talking on the phone and we seated ourselves. It wasn't a good experience that evening with that restaurant. View all feedback.
If ambiance is important to you, this is not the restaurant for you; although it is filled with eclectic & interesting African memorabilia. But if mouth-watering authentic African cuisine is important to you, this is the place for you! On my first visit, Saba herself took the time to go over the menu with me, discuss options with me, & prepare a Combo platter tailor-made to suite my preferences. One platter was enough to leave my husband & I full & satisfied. I’m a repeat custom & highly recommend Saba’s!This restaurant is carnivore, vegetarian & vegan friendly.
After reading the many positive reviews about this place my husband and I decided to check it out. I love finding small local restaurants to support. Was eager to try some unique cuisine. We arrived around 7 pm. The place was empty. Our waitress was nice. Brought menus and water (husband ordered tea) and made suggestions what to order as it was our first visit. After approximately 40 minutes the cook came out and asked what we had ordered. She claimed the waitress left without giving her our order. We repeated our order - I wanted the chicken and rice. The cook said she really didn't feel like making rice...(???? This is a restaurant)...so I changed my order. Husband asked for a tea again (it hadn't come). At 8:20 we debated leaving but our food came. Assortment of meat. One of the 4 meat dishes were freshly made as it was hot and flavourful. The other three were microwaved. We knew this as they were barely warm and heard the microwave opening and closing multiple times during our wait for our food. The portion was very small. We assumed this was one dish meant for one person Husband still didn't get his tea. Cook returned to table with the tea after we had consumed some of the food. We asked if this was all the food. She said yes. We then asked for the bill and decided to leave. (Husband just got his tea which he didn't drink). They charged us $25 for a half eaten plate of food. Cook said if we had ate more she would have brought more out and charged us more. Explained we were frustrated with the wait and the microwaved food. Price didn't change. Decided to cut our losses. Paid and went home to cook a warm fresh meal. Left the tea untouched on the table. Diner beware.
Seriously, I wasn't expecting much but the food at Saba's is worth the time it takes to arrive after ordering. Check it out.
Hidden treasure. We tried supper here on day. We had no clue about this type of food, but the owner is a very friendly man who helped us out. The food was very good. I will return again.
Amazing, authentic food. Wonderful environment. Can't wait to go back here for some more amazing African food.
