Despite being tourists we managed to find this place based on reviews whilst looking for great BBQ in Santa Barbara. It is slightly off of the beaten track and nice to get away from the main tourist areas of town. This place is all about the food there is no indoor seating and service is from a hole in the wall. I'm a complete fan of Shalhoods! They do an amazing job and can be trusted to always deliver a fine meal at an outstanding price. However, this review is for their experiment at the public market, and I dare say, the burger I just had, was probably the worst Thing I have ever tasted. It's a cross between a burger and some sort of beat up thin excuse for meat that is butchered and fried to death. It equates to less th... View all feedback.

The Gem Salad was very good. The service was good. The Fries were a major disappointment. Why do they call frozen fries Fresh
Despite being tourists we managed to find this place based on reviews whilst looking for great BBQ in Santa Barbara. It is slightly off of the beaten track and nice to get away from the main tourist areas of town. This place is all about the food there is no indoor seating and service is from a hole in the wall. Some of the seating arrangements, whilst cool looking, are not practical (the barrels). We both had the pork ribs which were fantastic with plenty of meat. Sides were also good particularly the mac and cheese. For simple, hearty BBQ it was great, but this lacked the 'experience ' of dining out.
I love their meats from the butcher shop, let's see how they are in the kitchen. First impression: It's hard to find a spot to park, just as most everything in the Funk Zone. Staff is friendly enough, and the prices aren't bad considering the neighborhood and assuming the meat is fresh. Good booze selection, I assume they farm out the brewing of their private label beer. It's not bad either way. The tall tables and chairs may be hip, but they are also very uncomfortable. Okay, here comes the food! First thing I try is the giant serving of street corn. OMG. It tastes like it is fresh off the cob and is probably the best street corn that I've had. Next up is the white BBQ smoked chicken and it is delicious. The smoke flavor is subtle and that's a perfect match for the white sauce. My better half ordered nachos and it was so large we nibbled on it for three days. It was just as good as my chicken, too. I was also impressed with their homemade pickles, the pickled jalapeno, and the homemade pico de gallo. I can't wait to go back and try their sandwiches, tacos, and pretty much the entire menu.
Don't skip this place on your next visit to Santa Barbara. The food was AMAZING. Street corn, chicken mole tacos and the jalapeño mezcal margarita. Yum! Off the beaten path and very casual.
