Sabores y Salsas moved from Salida a Celaya to Salida a Queretaro, in front of the Mirador. It is now part of a hotel and offers in addition to great food, wonderful views of the center of San Miguel. Chef Maria is always there to...personally prepare your food and also make sure all clients are satisfied. The ambiance is very informal, certainly not a high end expensive restaurant, but the food is always tasty and fresh. My wife and I just went twice in a week to taste Chef Maria's Chiles en Nogada a September tradition in Mexico. Although this dish is originally from Puebla, Chef María's Chiles en Nogada are certainly the best in San Miguel and actually better than the Chiles we tried in Puebla. Tasty but not greasy at all, and the Nogada sauce is made from fresh walnuts, but Chef Maria seems to add a touch of almonds as well. Other dishes at the restaurant like enchiladas and fish tacos are also very good. Always fresh, always with a personal touch from Chef Maria. Salsas y Sabores is also a great place for breakfast. One dish I particularly like is Cazuela Poblana but the traditional chilaquiles are also worth trying. And the price... actually very reasonable. Salsas y Sabores is not expensive at all, and it is the kind of place where you and your guests are guaranteed a good meal and even go on a regular basis. Chef Maria's customers are quite loyal. One important note: Sabores y Salsas opens Wednesday-Sunday for breakfast and lunch. It normally closes around or pm, so not a dinner place if you eat on Mexican time.

Very small place near the Centro. The chef comes out personally to see if everything is ok. I ordered the chicken mole, and my husband ordered the pork stew. We both liked the pork stew the best. It was served with a side of rice....The stew has potatoes as well as pork. The ice cream is made from the biznaga cactus, and it was the best ice cream that I have ever had. Apparently, the cactus is boiled down with other ingredients to make a candy, and the candy is added to the ice cream. The chef is allergic to many things, so he has used this problem to create gluten free, dairy free dishes that he can eat. The chef gives cooking classes and market tours, which we will take next time we are here.

Our group of eleven visited the new location of this wonderful little restaurant in the Hotel El Mirador on Salida Real a Queretaro right across from the Mirador overlook of San Miguel de Allende. Normally only open until Chef Maria took our...reservation for and she and a helper cooked for our little group. Having read about Chef Maria’s abilities on blogs and Tripadvisor, I was pleasantly surprised to have a renown chef cooking and personally serving us. I started with the guacamole appetizer plate which was superb. Three of us then ordered the pollo enmolado which is a plate of chicken enchiladas in Chef Maria’s special dark mole sauce. Her mole is outstanding. Our American host who has lived in Mexico for years said it was the best mole he had tasted. That plate is not on the menu so just ask for the enchiladas with her special mole sauce. My Mexican friend ordered the chile en nogada which is a large poblano chile pepper stuffed with a special mincemeat made of beef, nuts, peach, mango, raisins, apples and more. His plate was a work of art with the colors of Mexico. Our other host tried the curried chicken plate and it was delicious with subtle spices. To top it off Chef Maria brought us out a sample of one of her desserts which was a sort of a sweet apple turnover – delicious. With a beautiful view of the city, the delight of the evening was watching the sun set over San Miguel de Allende from an open balcony of this delightful little restaurant and hotel. Chef Maria speaks English and is a warm person and an excellent chef. Her prices are very reasonable and her food outstanding. Our party of eleven ate for around US.

Stopped in this modest looking place on the Ancha when our destination restaurant was closed. Lucky for us! We were served a lemongrass tea, fresh bread with herb butter, and a wonderful stacked salad before we could unfold our servilletas by a sweet and attentive...staff. Maria offers a fixed menu with options that changes everyday. Second course was a very flavorful cream of vegetable soup, which I followed with chicken in a guajilla orange juice sauce, while my vegetarian wife had enmoladas in homemade mole, por supuesto. Dessert was a creamy rice pudding with cinnamon and sugar cookies chased by Mexican coffee with molasses. Gourmet food at tipico prices! Rick Bayless would definitely approve! Going back tomorrow to see what Maria's cooking. Open Wednesday thru Sunday, to so plan accordingly. ¡Provecho!
