Café Rojo - San Jose

We selected this restaurant based on the good reviews and because it was open later than most restaurants in the vicinity of our hotel. The food is described as Vietnamese fusion. Our meals were very flavorful. The casado with chicken was a delicious and very filling meal. The chicken had a sweet Asian sauce, the salad was dressed with a tamarind sauce on it and the lentils were nicely spiced with cumin. My partner had the “bun” noodle bowl with chicken and was equally happy with his meal. Service was good. Waitstaff was friendly and spoke both Spanish and English.

Beautiful restaurant with some personable and friendly service from the waiters. I love how there’s an infusion of Vietnamese flavours into local Costa Rican cooking. Apparently the old owners were inspired by their trip to Vietnam (smart! Amazing lunch experience thoroughly!

This is a must try spot with plenty of vegan and non-vegan food options to satisfy everyone in your group. The food was delicious, we had the mushroom rolls and mushroom banh mi. Both are vegan. Others in our group had the eggplant banh mi and trout ban (noodle bowl). Everyone liked their food. The fruit juices were good too. Bonus points for being LGBTQ friendly. We came here twice during our trip to Costa Rica. It is definitely a spot I would come back to again. The food we had was delicious. I will say the mushroom banh-mi takeaway was a little salty. But when we ate it at the restaurant it was perfect so might have just sat for too long. Staff was really nice and helpful. We did dine-in lunch and take-out dinner (on separate days). I would recommend dining in as the place has a cozy ambiance.

Am extremely cozy and friendly cafe close to the city centre. The ambience resembles an old house. The staff is extremely welcoming, polite and helpful.

Delicious food, great service and a lovely place to have lunch. The bowl and banh mi were so tasty. And the sauces the kind staff talk you through compliment it perfectly.
