The kitsune udon and omakase nigiri were delightful. However, the restaurant's ambiance is quite dim, with the only illumination coming from outside. The sushi leans more towards sashimi than nigiri, as the pieces of fish are significantly larger than the rice. Additionally, the omission of ginger—an essential palate cleanser between bites—was disappointing. View all feedback.
We came right at opening for lunch on a weekday and we're seated immediately. The restaurant is quite cozy and quiet, perfect for a casual meal to catch up with friends. I thought everything on the menu was delicious, and we ordered most of the appetizers they offered. My favorites were the agedashi tofu and gyoza (the crispiest gyoza I've ever had)! The fried avocado was also sooo good. My friends liked the baked mussels the most. The four piece sashimi plates had substantial slices that were delicious. My favorite sushi roll was their signature Kazan roll. The slightly torched fish on top had an amazing seared flavor while still having the classic sashimi texture. The food all came out very quickly, and the servers were very kind! Parking here is ok, you'll have to look for metered parking or free street parking on the cross streets.
Stopped into this place right after a theatre show in the neighborhood. Reminded me of some Tokyo places I’ve visited. Varied menu. We shared the seaweed salad, fried calamari and mushroom fries. All were delicious and service was fast.
My boyfriend and I love it here! We get nigiri or sashimi samplers or chirashi bowl and you can taste the quality. The server is really sweet and helpful. Great place for a delicious dinner in sf.Food: 5/5
I've been wanting to try Kazan for a while because I heard really good things. For a casual sushi spot that's not gonna break the bank, I think Kazan is fantastic. My date and I ordered the Spicy Popcorn Chicken (3 stars), but would not order again. I was hoping for chicken karaage but this wasn't it. The popcorn chicken was more breaded than battered and it was served with a sweet chili sauce as opposed a mayo-based sauce. The highlight of the meal was the Sashimi Deluxe (5 stars) which was around $95 for 25 pieces of sashimi and the kama (fish collar) which is grilled after you finish the sashimi. Overall the Sashimi Deluxe is a really good value with a good variety of fish. The highlights for me were the hotate, sake toro and what I think was chu-toro. My date and I each ordered a bowl of sushi rice and felt this was enough food for us. Once you finish the sashimi the serve took the fish head away and grilled it. The kama was seasoned with salt and pepper and had a nice char. I definitely would come back to Kazan to try some of their rolls and other sushi offerings.
Indoor space is a little tight. Highly recommend sitting at the bar.Full disclosure 1 block from my house and eat here couple times a month.Food: 5/5
