First of all San Carlos de Bariloche is a spectacular destination on Lake Nahuel Huapi in the Argentine region of Rio Negro. It is a year-round destination, blah-blah all guidebook stuff. The downtown is hugely schlocky touristy, but so what? The whole point is to be in the Andes on a spectacular alpine like. Take the tram up Cerro Campaniaro or the Cerro Catedral for incredible mountain vistas. As for Club Hotel Dut Bariloche, it is located near the famous Llao-Llao (pronounced zhou-zhou resort hotel, 20 km west, outside the cuidad. It is bucolic and lovely. The grounds are irrigated and lush on the shores of the Brazo Campaniaro, a small inlet off the larger lake. Geese, ibis, plovers and several other avian species frequent the resort. Fine by day, they are lovely to behold. The problem is at night. The grounds are lit at night and this seems to encourage night time avian foraging and associated vocalization. In other words, the beautiful birds make a racket throughout the night. We enjoyed a 2 BR apartment with a small, efficient kitchen, unit 1-6. I never could get the oven to light, but the small gas stove allowed us to prepare meals at home. Wonderful. The grounds of Llao-Llao 3 km west of DUT are located within a large city park that offers nice walking trails on the shores of Lago Moreno. Kayaks and SUP are available for rent, as are bicycles at the roundabout at 19.5 km. The town is full of stray dogs, who all appear healthy and not lacking for sustenance. We hiked up Cerro Campaniaro, about a 300 meter elevation gain. We were guided up the trail by one of these town strays, a pretty shepherd mix. Amazingly, this same pup showed up on the beach on Lago Moreno Este the next day, more than 4km from where we saw him the day before. We were convinced he 'd adopted us, and we felt priveliged. Bariloche had the added attraction of being a hub for craft brewing, offering no fewer than four local cerveza artesenal brewpubs. We can say Cervezeria Berlina located at 11km west of downtown offers a lovely beer garden setting and solid pub fare. Beers are good, not great. Don 't expect brews on par with the best of NorCal and Portland. Hey, it 's beer. How bad can it be?
