What Victoria Cavaleri doesn't like about The Bread Box:
My husband and I discovered this rare gem at the Alley shops. Everything yummy and fresh. White table cloths and cute dinner ware. Absolutely the best fries in the world! View all feedback.
Found this hidden gem doing a google search of restaurants on my way to an appointment. Didn't have much time and was in and out so quickly. I did order the special for lunch both the sandwich and the coconut cauliflower curry soup. They were divine! My husband enjoyed his chicken salad salad and everyone around us were enjoying their tasty looking treats and lunches as well. Chris Q was an excellent server. Everyone there was very attentive and kept our drinks filled. I want to go back NOW!
The Bread Box is nestled into an area called The Alley, and they claim to bake everything on site, fresh daily, including their breads, pastries, cupcakes, and pies! When you first walk in, there's a huge display of their baked goods to buy and take home, or you can dine in for breakfast or lunch. It's a cozy place to meet up with your mom or some girlfriends.<br/ <br/ Weekend lunch menu consists mostly of sandwiches (combo available with soup or salad and chips), our group shared a couple along with some pie slices. The Chicken Ranch Bacon sandwich looked and smelled great but I'm not much of a bacon person. The chicken salad with pecans and grapes, a version I usually don't care for, was super fresh. The Italian Melt was the best pick of the bunch with fresh tomato and basil, and it paired well with their poblano cream soup. Lemon Meringue and Peach Cobbler pies were both well-made with solid crusts, but the meringue stole the show with the perfect level of tartness!<br/ <br/ NOTE: Online menu includes vegetarian/vegan items that are no longer available (cauliflower melt, beet Reuben), only saw one vegan option currently (lentil bowl) and a friend was underwhelmed by the portion for the price.
Love to buy there sour dough bread. Best in San Antonio. I always get 2 loaves and freeze one. They both taste great. Great shopping in all the shops in The Alley.
I am wary in posting a review about this place because I do not want anyone to know about this place! It 's just a great place to go eat breakfast or lunch. The entire staff is great and pleasant. It does get busy during the lunch and church times, but it is well worth it 's weight in bread! They do supply their bread to other small businesses here in SA so that 's another great detail about them.<br/ <br/ The desserts are also grand! The carrot cake is well known to who knows :D The handpies are so comforting with a cup of tea or coffee. And their daily 'birthday cake ' is always a marvel to look at.
This bakery and deli may be difficult to find, but it was worth it. <br/ I had the beet Ruben with potato chips. The sauce in the sandwich was on point. <br/ The birthday cake was light and not too sweet. Their pecan tart was super sweet. <br/ <br/ Their menu is limited and changes seasonally. <br/ <br/
