Brian West is one of the best chefs in San Antonio, and the food at Cafe Paladar reflects his interests. It's a pity, though, that this gem is not better known. It's a little out of the way but is well worth searching out. We will go again whatever the next popup incarnation might be. View all feedback.
What Darrion Prohaska doesn't like about Pop Up For A Purpose Featuring Cafe Paladar:
I really like the concept and the space of this restaurant, it is very clean and well utilized. Our server, David, was knowledgeable about the menu and provided good service. We started with the pickled mustard greens, which were served cold. They had a great flavor profile, but were slightly salty. This restaurant is definitely on its way out and lacks a welcoming atmosphere. It is located in a strip center with no ambience and the exterior leaves much to be desired.
We have dined at Chef Brian West's PopUp for a Purpose three times now and we wish more people were aware of it. It is a great dining experience, with a portion of the proceeds going to non-profit organizations. The food is incredible, with a pan-Asian influence. While it may not be ideal for children, if you appreciate delicious food, be sure to try it before it is no longer available.

We started with the pickled mustard greens, which were served cold. They had a great flavor profile, but were slightly salty. The tempura vegetables were a hit, and the wok-seared Asian mushrooms were good, though also too salty. I ordered the Peking style duck breast cooked medium rare, and it was excellent. My wife ordered the Bi Bim Bap, which had nice flavors but the rice with sauce was overly salty. I would suggest that Chef Brian have his kitchen staff taste their dishes to ensure they are not too salty.
We've now enjoyed Chef Brian West's PopUp for a Purpose times and just wish more people knew about it. Especially since part of the proceeds benefit non-profits. The food was amazing, sort of pan Asian- not really a kids place but if you like excellent food..try it before it's gone!
