Sunshine Apothecary is my go-to for herbal supplements for more than a decade. Since 2010 I have trusted the owner Gena Shepherd for my own herbal health advice, and for herbal remedies for my children. Now that I moved away from Salida, I'm still contacting Gena if I have a health problem. From skin sensitivities, to chronic pain, to immune-promoting teas – Genea always has the answer. And if she doesn't research me. Then I order online and Sunshine Apothecary sends the products to me incredibly fast. Very recommended!

Life is full of physical and emotional challenges, and the drugs and therapies on the market we use to tackle them are countless. Unfortunately, many of these products can be expensive and occasionally dangerous. Watch a TV trading for arthritis medications and you will see what I mean: It could cause the pain, but the warning label is long and alarming. Fortunately, healthier ways to combat disease, disease and trauma are available; in fact, some can be found in your kitchen cabinet or garden. This way is not always intuitive, but with the help of people like Gena Shepherd, owner of Sunshine Apothecary in Salida, Colorado, it could be. As the poet Rumi once said, “Maybe you look among the branches, because what appears only in the roots.” Shepherd has enjoyed a passion for plants since she was a child; it shows if you are happy enough to have a conversation with her. She seems certain to know what she talks about that there are thirty years of experience in herbal medicine, natural skin care and nutritional therapies to support it. She knows a lot about natural remedies for everything from fear to pain management, and Botanicals play an important role in their business success. (A botanical is a plant or plant part that is evaluated for its medical or therapeutic properties, taste and/or fragrance. The modest Sunshine Apothecary shines in the shade of its great chain neighbour, natural food. This is mainly because Shepherd has recently made the demolished decision to identify herself and focus on a niche market: herbs and how to use them for medical purposes. In mid-December she ditched dietary supplements and health and turned her attention to “roots and leaves.” It hopes that this change in the structure of the company will preserve its competitiveness. If you walk in the door of Sunshine Apothecary, the first thing you probably notice is how clean and mowed it is. Hundreds of delicate tincture bottles and transparent glass glasses with grounded granules, powders and buds line the walls. I visited Sunshine on Sunday afternoon. Shepherd held the fort and greeted me with a friendly Hello and an invitation to enjoy a cup of hot tea. “Tummy Tamer” tea is a soothing mix of herbs that should remain silent from inside to outside – a half teaspoon of maple sugar granules, stirred into the small porcelain cup Shepherd gave me the character rounded off. It was delicious. If you have time to browse Sunshine Apothecary at a cozy pace, do that. There is a lot to explore and no sales pitch or printing game to make you feel awkward or uncomfortable. The mood is peaceful, and if a customer wants to discuss a personal concern with Shepherd or one of the other practitioners in the shop, the room feels safe and accepts it. The Sunshine Apothecary inventory is divided between Shepherd's products and objects produced in India. I decided to try something from every group. I have selected a bottle of Special Amla Hair Oil (to rejuvenate and enrich the texture, color and strength of my hair and a luxurious glass of light and creamy, light yellow aloe moisturizer (to hydrate and soothe my skin and soften the appearance of wrinkles). Other things found their way into my arms: a porcelain mortar and pipe set I can use my own tinctures, two tea infusers, and an organic herbal tea mix called "Nourish", the nettle, raspberry leaf, red clover, Alfalfa, Hibiscus and Marshmallow, a combination that will strengthen weak and damaged hair from inside to outside. Shepherd finally asked me in a novation of sustainability whether she wants to pack my purchases in a recycled "t shirt bag". This got a big “Hell, yes!” from me because I were invented rue the day plastic food bags. The T-shirt bag she gave me was Heather Grey and read “Nobody puts baby in a corner” in bright red. Salida Sunshine Apothecary is rooted in humanitarian and planetary goodness; its products are first class. Word of mouth marketing will be important for the survival of this small community store, so if you are so inclined, please try it.
