Cabane A Sucre Handfield

With the presence of an alternative menu designed to please a wider audience (vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free), Cabane à sucre Handfield has great ambitions. Unfortunately, and despite such good intentions, I was quite disappointed with my visit to Cabane. While it is priced the same as the traditional menu, the vegan menu dishes are far from being as varied: apart from the bread (now without animal products! , pea soup, and lentil creton offered as appetizers, the main course consists only of tofu marinated in maple syrup, polenta, beans, and a steamed potato. The portions served were adequate: as it is a sugar shack, you can order as much as you want, but I didn't feel like having more after one plate! I was thinking at least I was saving room for desserts. I was taken aback when they arrived at the table: the only vegan option (note the singular use) was a caramel-coated baked apple. In contrast, the traditional menu includes sugar pies, pudding, and other pancakes. It is all the more unfortunate considering that all these preparations are easily veganized. The alternative menu is a step in the right direction (which I encourage! but it is neither original nor complete. At least the maple taffy was delicious! However, I would like to commend the organization and attention of the staff. If you choose the vegan menu, you are given a card at the beginning of the meal to leave on the table to facilitate service (be aware, though: the card mentions a semolina and caramel cake but, due to lack of popularity, it has been replaced by the caramel apple. When the dishes arrive, the waiters clearly indicate which ones are suitable for your dietary requirements. There was only one server who seemed not to care (and cleared the plates without asking if we were finished. In short, if you are vegan, you will probably have a better experience at a vegetarian sugar shack (like La Cabane à Tuque. Cabane à sucre Handfield accommodates but fails to offer a memorable vegan experience. The presence of horse-drawn carriages may also bother you. If you still want to go, make sure to specify the desired menu when making a reservation.
