Cabane a Sucre Chez Oswald

This is my third year attending the Sugar Shack. My father-in-law grew up in the area and it's a traditional and affordable dining experience. Reservations and payment for the room must be made in advance. The menu remains the same with dishes like soup, borons, vienna sausages in syrup, sink, egg yolk, kartoffels, meatballs in syrup, bacon crisps, roasted egg in syrup, deep roasted crepes and sugarcake, all served with maple syrup. The service can be slow at times, especially for larger groups who may need to ask for extra servings. Guests are allowed to bring their own alcohol and drinks as the restaurant only serves coffee and water. Outside, there is syrup on snow for rolling with popsicle sticks, a path through maple trees, horse and trailer rides, and animals to see. The rustic decor includes bathrooms without hot water and no locks on the doors. Parking can be problematic as vehicles are parked close to the building, creating congestion and safety concerns. It would be safer to relocate the parking area and provide designated gathering spaces away from vehicle traffic.

The menu does not change: Pea soup, beans, vienna sausage in syrup, ham, an egg loaf, potatoes, meatballs in syrup, bacon crisp, fried egg in syrup, a deep fried crepe, and sugar pie.... of course all this in maple syrup which is in abundance... the servers can get overwhelmed and larger groups need to ask for extras as the portions are not largeYou bring your own alcohol and drinks as they serve coffee and waterthey have the syrup on snow outside which you can roll with a popsicle stick there are some trails through the maple trees for walking as well as a horse and trailer ride and a couple of animals in pens for the childrenthe ambience is fun and finenot spectacular but not bad either two huge issues 1. the bathrooms.... for men its very rustic ---old and worn down no hot water and no lock on the bathroom door... could use a clean up2. parking.... the owners have vehicles parked right beside the building .... it gets cramped in a hurry when the horse tour is stopping and groups are congregating around the syrup as well as just hanging out in the parking areas while partaking of beverages... traffic and running children.. can become a lethal combination... move the parking area away and create areas where people can hang out without worrying about getting hit by a vehicle or a vehicle owner wondering why someone is sitting on their hood...

As a fourth generation Chicagoan, I have a deep love for my city. However, if I wasn't so rooted here, I would definitely choose to live in New Orleans. In fact, I feel like I have one foot planted there already.

I visited this restaurant for brunch on Sunday, December 3rd and I absolutely love the neighborhood. It has a charming old-school vibe with a great mix of diversity and flair.
