Of course all starts with the great location. The menu is mainly fish but there are a few alternatives in case one of a group doesn't like fish. The Wels catfish was a real discovery, the Zander on risotto was very good too - some welcome new discoveries. Not sure why someone here says the side dishes couldn't be changed - we asked and there was no problem doing so.Prices are a little on the high side but not excessiv... What Jennifer Turner doesn't like about Heinzle:
Went here as part of our walking holiday to celebrate my wife's birthday. Read the reviews and a local guide book that recommend it. Well I walked straight out after being seated. The staff were rude when we asked for a table. We then asked for an English menu (EVERY place we have been has had either an English menu or an extremely kind waiter who has translated for us). The response I got was like I had insulted the... View all feedback.
We just came back from 4 days in Weißenkirchen in der Wachau. We are somewhat of a food snob from Southern California and had a difficult time finding good places to eat during our 3 wks in Central Europe (Prague, Vienna, Budapest). I would have to say Heinzle was a rare exception. We went on our first night stay in Weißenkirchen at the recommendation of our hotel hosts. The waterfront location was something special. We were seated without a reservation (first in a not so nice location, then quickly moved to a perfect spot to enjoy the Danube).Salad, two entrees, two drinks under $50. I would say something comparable in Los Angels (say Malibu, would easily double that without the picturesque Danube view/vibe). We knew we were at an authentic local gem of a restaurant when the check came without a service fee (most nicer or hotel run restaurants in the Wachau valley came with a 10% service fee). We were pleasantly surprised when the server was overly pleased with a 20% tip. All in all a very satisfying experience. The only regret was that we didn't get a chance for a return visit since they close on Mon & Tues.
You just can't beat this setting for dinner; outside on the banks of the Danube River and, if you like fish, you can't get any fresher than this. My wife and I both started with cream of white asparagus soup. It was excellent. I had a local fish over risotto and it was also excellent. My wife does not care for fish so she had white asparagus with ham in a cream sauce. There were no complaints. For dessert a delicious dumpling with raspberry sauce and ice cream. Service was great and the host was very friendly and spoke English very well which made it easy for us to understand the menu.
