What PoppyPrincessEats doesn't like about The Rose Of York:
What a disappointment. Had been here with my dad about 10years ago and had pleasant enough memories. So when we walked past it I suggested giving it a try. The food is OK, but the customer service is terrible: a salad and a sandwich took nearly half an hour, kitchen doesn't open till 1pm and to top it all were delayed from paying while the barman played around with something with the chef. Such a shame, as reasonably... View all feedback.
We arrived at the restaurant with our family of eight. The service was initially slow despite the empty dining area. My husband, who is gluten-free, was disappointed to find no specific gluten-free options on the menu. We had to explain his dietary restrictions to the staff. After waiting for over an hour, our food finally arrived. The Fish and Chips ordered were disappointing, with more batter than fish and they were not very hot. The Chilli Beans and Rice dishes were served cold and had to be reheated in the microwave. The child's Macaroni Cheese with chips was decent, while the Veggie Burger and Chips were inedible due to being overcooked in the microwave. After some negotiation, the restaurant only charged us £20 for our meal. While the food quality was subpar, we appreciated their fair treatment with the bill. It is up to you whether you want to dine at this establishment.
Today, I went to the restaurant with my partner, son, and granddaughter. We ordered two fish and chips as well as two steak and ale pies. When we asked for vinegar, we were initially told they were out of it, but they eventually brought some. Unfortunately, the pie crust was hard, the filling was subpar, and the vegetables, including the mashed potatoes, were not very good. I have had much better meals elsewhere and will not be returning to this restaurant. It was a waste of money.
When we arrived at 12.30pm, the place was deserted as usual. I approached a man lounging at the bar and asked if he worked there. He answered with a stony stare and pointed to a corridor when I inquired about the location of the disabled toilets. As we were ready to order our food, another unfriendly individual appeared behind the bar. We were rudely informed that the chef had gone to see a doctor due to a leg injury, with no apology or offer of an alternative. When we asked how long the wait for food would be, we were met with indifference and told it might not be until 3pm or possibly not at all. We bought drinks while we contemplated our options, which, unsurprisingly, were not offered on the house as a gesture of goodwill. In a last-ditch effort to salvage our lunch, we asked for recommendations for nearby eateries. Our unresponsive host tersely mentioned a couple of local places as if we were inconveniencing him. The expected apology for the chef's absence never came, and it was clear that any form of kindness or hospitality was out of the question. In all our years of dining out, we have never experienced such rude, offensive, and unhelpful behavior. Needless to say, we will not be returning to The Rose of York and strongly advise others against visiting as well. We ended up at the Fox Duck, where we were greeted with warmth, hospitality, and excellent food. We are grateful for their kind welcome and service.
Please anyone who has received a parking ticket whilst using the pub these can be cancelled via the pub as long as there is proof of transaction at the pub and within a month of the ticket being distributed.
We called in for a quick pint on a hot afternoon, and we sat outside we was only there half hour and left, a week later we get a £60 fine for parking in there car park, I explained to the management and they said you should have signed the book at the entrance. Me and my son did not see the book and it would have been helpful if the bar staff would just tell you when your ordering if you drove in please sign the book. So please be careful they are not helpful and don't careless about there customers.
