Diners enjoy the well-managed selection of beers and hearty meals, exemplified by specialties like homemade steak pie and pork escalope. However, reviews reveal a stark contrast for some, reporting slow, dismissive service and subpar food quality, leading to disappointment, especially during special occasions. Despite mixed reviews, the pub’s warm ambiance, local charm, and attentive staff shine through, making it worth the visit for those seeking a true community dining experience.
Very friendly staff and atmosphere. Food was great and very good portions. Even provided lunch for our dog.
Yesterday (22nd. November) was our first visit to The Griffin and as soon as we walked in we experienced a warm welcome enhanced by the warmth from the log fire in the bar. We were taken to a table and handed the menus which were more extensive than expected. The service was always with a smile and timely ensuring that the food and plates arrived nice and hot. My “Lamb’s liver+bacon+mash+veg:” selected from the day’s ‘Specials’ blackboard was delicious. The two ladies accompanying me had the Pork Escalopes from the main menu and declared them to be really excellent. Afterwards, although a ‘macchiato’ was not on the list of available coffees, the lady serving us offered to try and make two. The first attempt was not quite right but the second attempt was perfect. Our lunch at the Griffin was a very last minute decision due to the Wye Knot Stop café opposite being closed (despite their website saying otherwise) and as it turned out, we were pleased that they were. It was due to the efforts of those who served us and especially those working in the kitchen that our lunches at The Griffin were so very enjoyable . . . so it’s a “Hvala” from Croatia.
Went out for my mother’s birthday and found the service extremely poor were the only table in at the time (early evening) and found it as we were being rushed through our food wouldn’t be left alone by the waitress also found her extremely rude. And when we thought it wasn’t going to get any worse when our food arrived it was burnt and over cooked, my mother and grandmother and my little cousin were still eating as they started to take plates away even my cousins plate as he picked up his last bite not even had a chance to chew before the plate was taken, again made us feel like we were being rushed out. The waitress just came across as she just didn’t want to be there, we were not offered dessert we had to go up to the bar to request it, my cousins felt so rushed that they left early before dessert. Me and my family found the whole experience extremely disappointing and will not be returning.
We have passed by this venue also on a weekly basis. What a lovely inn with a great old day style. We were given a warm welcome by the young lady behind the bar. Service was very calm and laid back and our orders taken promptly. Small but varied menu. Food came in a timely fashion and was nice was of good quality. Food is reasonable price.
My family and I were a party of 12 celebrating my husbands 60th bday. We had sunday lunch/starters/pudd. The service and food was excellent. Would definitely recommend.
