The food was fine, although the prices are higher than average on São Miguel. The service is very variable. Sometimes friendly and hospitable but the next moment you are told to hurry up and they are chewing gum next to you. I found it strange that the waiter said about a dish on the menu that it was frozen meat and that I had better take something from the region (which was of course more expensive). He tried to get... I found this venue on line and our Hotel reception booked it for us last night. Reception also booked our taxi. On arrival there we were shown to a nice table and ordered wine. A charming waitress helped my GF wife (her birthday) to order a mushroom starter and a duck main course. She enjoyed the starter but found the duck to be served very rare. I ordered Hake Tempura but what a very large portion this starter was. Very tasty but could have been a sharing starter really. My main was a very enjoyable fish dish which I thought was coming with frites disappointingly however it was served with a creamy rice dish in a Creuset type pot but it was enough to serve about eight people and not what I thought I was getting. The very rare duck and my rice did not prevent from us having an enjoyable meal in what was very much a restaurant used by local islanders. We’d go again but be a bit more careful about what we ordered. A taxi was ordered for us.
After coming on holidays from UK to Azores and being born in Portugal I was expecting a great place full of enthusiasm and character……but since I booked this table some time ago for dinner I called and changed my reservation for lunch. We arrived at 13:30 the restaurant had 3/4 tables maximum. After being greeted by the waiter which showed us the table we sat down saw the chef and owner and we ordered our drinks, food and that’s it! During the service we noticed that the chef/owner was visiting and serving all tables, chatting and etc. We don’t need to be chatty and etc…… but a bit of cordially conversation and etc is nice everywhere. About the food was ok, we ordered picanha for 2, since my wife is from Brasil and to be honest her grandmother picanha and rice and black beans with bacon are better than this ones. But having said that the pineapple crepe was an absolute treat, very very good , hence the 3 stars review. So to the owner you should pay the same attention to all of your paying patrons on a restaurant, and treat them with a bit more respect. Many thanks.
We went on recommendation from our tour guide and we’re very pleased. This is a small, fine dining establishment with outstanding selection of fresh fish and wine as well as other offerings. We shared a filet, wreck fish in English, that was mouth melting. Salad and garlic bread we’re generous portions and the desert, pineapple crepe with ice cream, was perfect. Our wine, an Azorean white crisp selection, was a perfect accompaniment. Service was attentive and helpful.
At first you will be surprised by the absence of a traditional paper menu. Do not let yourself be discouraged, from appetizer to dessert, the food was special league of gastronomy. An explosion of excellent taste.
We stayed twice in Saca Rolhas Taberna and it was amazing
