My boyfriend and I hiked up to Monte Grona with our new Canadian friend we met on the bus to Breglia. The hike is grueling and we were famished when hiking...
Really wholesome weekend visiting Rifugio Menaggio. Perfect overnight trip from Milan! It’s a 1 hour train to Varenna followed by 15 mins on a boat to Menaggio and then you have the option of getting a bus to Breglia (bus no. C13 where you can start the hike from there or you can hike straight from the town. We got the bus to Breglia and did a 1.5 hr hike to the rifugio on the first day. The staff were amazing and incredibly welcoming! We had some local craft beers on draft and sat on the green directly in front of the rifugio to take in the beautiful view. Dinner was all inclusive in the stay. Your typical mountain food of pizzocheri and polenta with stewed meat. Really delicious! A litre of red wine was €8. Best thing about the experience was how welcoming they were to our small dog, Fabio. Most rifugios in Italy don’t accept dogs overnight but we called and they were happy for him to come along! Rooms were ok.. what you would expect for the price. Breakfast was also included with fresh bread, jam, Nutella, homemade cakes, juice coffee. All you need! Buses don’t run on Sundays so we took the steeper trail back to Menaggio. Google maps said it would take over 3 hours but it actually only took us 2. Would highly recommend for a cost effective night away :
