What Carrie Kozubal doesn't like about Tortilla Real:
The food was lacking in flavor and the service was subpar. The vegetarian taco was particularly disappointing. However, the Aqua Fresca and chips with salsa were the standout dishes. Despite high expectations from previous reviews, we were ultimately let down and would not consider coming back. View all feedback.
The blue masa tortillas are so good! Authentic recipes from the owner's childhood. You get everything locally and you can taste it. Best vegan Mexican cuisine I've ever had!
Beautiful restaurant with good quality food and rice and sauces are safe for vegans.
Fantastic vegan Mexican options, a very separate "plant-based menu" that is for some reason not on their website. Two good soups (pozole and tortilla), two taco types (soy chorizo, avocado) a vegan blue-corn tamal with nothing inside but with cilantro stuffed zucchini, carrot, corn and served with incredibly well baked black beans, Mexican rice and homemade tortillas. Really nice (huge) salad (two options back), and light-spicy guacamole served with Jicama spears instead of tortilla chips.
I really like this restaurant because they have a separate menu just for vegans, which is a big plus. I noticed that someone else thought the Tortilla Soup was a bit thin, but I have had it multiple times and never had that experience. It's actually one of my favorite dishes there, and it is thick and filling. Their chips and guacamole is more like a meal than just a small side, and it is very satisfying. I haven't tried the tacos yet, but I will update once I do. The only thing I would say is that the vegan dishes (I can't speak for non-vegan dishes) are a bit too healthy for my taste. I know some vegans prefer that, but I personally would like more flavor depth that comes from spices and oil. I guess you can't please everyone! Overall, I would happily eat here every week and I am so happy to have this restaurant in town.
I found small chicken pieces in my vegan burrito, which was absolutely disgusting.
