We were surprised that Pavia doesn't have the same chic cafe culture seen in many Lombardian towns. There were few people having coffee but we enjoyed a wonderful apple strudel there, as it is the premier place for cake and sweetmeats.
Unwelcoming atmosphere. I went in for the first time thinking it was the best pastry shop in Pavia, but I had to change my mind. They didn't take me into consideration and my requests fell on deaf ears as if they didn't care about selling! I'll never go in again!
We went to Vigoni, a historic establishment in the center of Pavia, known for being the originator of Torta Paradiso. The space has been modernized, but the chosen style doesn't really reflect the older, more traditional part of the place, losing some of the charm we were expecting. I did order Torta Paradiso, but unfortunately, the slice served wasn't very fresh and was rather dry. The coffee also didn't convince us. Furthermore, the pastry buffet was very limited and didn't showcase their historic excellence. Added to this, the bill was quite high: €14 for a breakfast that, overall, didn't entirely satisfy us. A shame, considering the significant history and name of this pastry shop.
A historic pastry shop located on Pavia 's main street, just a few minutes ' walk from the Visconti Castle and practically across the street from the university. It bakes a variety of delicacies, topped by the legendary Torta Paradiso. Named after the name!
