The restaurant overlooking the cathedrale s. antonio. on a warm summer evening good eating, beautiful wine, attentive service, what do you want?
My wife and I were staying in Padua for a few days, and staying in the Hotel Donatello, which is directly opposite the Basilica of Saint Antonio. This restaurant used to be part of the hotel but separated some years ago. Our first night, we...decided to eat at the restaurant. It looked good and we were tired and hungry. We tried to sit down at an unlaid table intending to have an aperitif, but the waiter, very brusquely told us we could not sit there. We asked where we could sit and he waved his hand vaguely at another section. We had a drink, but the attitude of the entirely Asian staff was one of total indifference. When we came to order our meal, the waiter's attitude was bored and he could not have cared less. No attempt was made to point out his house's specialities, and he made no attempt to enquire if we wanted wine, or water. I was by now so entranced at the awful attitude of the staff I felt I had to stay and see if it could get any worse. The food was indifferent, the Calves' liver was swimming in oil and a very strange colour. All in all, an entirely forgettable experience. Needless to say we did not go back. For a restaurant in such a prime site, probably one of the best sites in Padua, one would think the owner would make more of an effort. Employing surly waiters who do not understand the subtleties of the local cuisine, and who give every indication of not caring about their customers or their food is a huge mistake. We found other wonderful restaurants in Padua. My advice is to avoid this place like the plague, you will not have a good experience if our visit was anything to go by.
