Augusta - Oxford
Augusta
Description
Once a celebrated dining destination in Oxford, this restaurant has experienced a stark decline in quality following the departure of founding Chef Ben. Guests have reported disappointing food that lacks the flavor depth they once cherished, with beloved favorites like gumbo falling flat. Service issues, including slow response times and errors on bills, further mar the experience. Although some diners still praise select dishes, the overall consensus suggests a tarnished reputation. With unanswered questions about transparency regarding changes in management, many long-time patrons are choosing to take their business elsewhere. The once-thriving establishment now faces an uncertain future.

During a recent visit, we were unaware that Chef Ben had left, but the noticeable decline in food quality and taste was impossible to ignore. We ordered our usual favorites—the New Orleans shrimp starter and gumbo—but they lacked the depth of flavor and overall enjoyment we had come to expect. It was quite disappointing. Dessert didn’t impress either. The pie they served tasted like it had come straight from a Cisco delivery truck and was probably frozen. Chef Ben would have never allowed such a thing to leave the kitchen; it was terrible. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning.
I used to really enjoy this restaurant and even drove all the way from Galena, IL to Oxford just to eat there! Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case. Chef Ben has left, but the other partner/owner seems to want to keep that a secret. They’re banking on retaining the original concept from Ben and Jeri, along with the name and Chef Ben’s menu, hoping that will keep the customers coming in. However, I don’t think it will be long before this place starts to decline. I wouldn’t recommend it anymore.
Would give a zero if I could. My first reaction on the last visit was, Wow, what happened? We use to go to Augusta a lot. The food and service were 5 star incredible. This last time both were HORRIBLE. The gumbo was water. The service was snail SLOW and rude. We had to ask several times for clean silverware. Found out later that award winning Chef Ben and his wife Jeri are no longer there (not by their choice). Although you can 't tell from the website because they are still using his credentials, pictures and recipes. Ben 's recipes don 't work without Ben. Service is not working without Jeri. We won 't go back. SAD.
You've got some truly superb fried chicken here, along with a fantastic selection of everything else on the menu, Iowa City. You definitely should support this place!
