It has been some years since the last time I paid a visit to this veritable temple of the good food. An excellent white wine (Ribeiro) and then we entered into matter: raw oysters and an excellent stew of squid. Should I say anything else? Go there and enjoy!
I went to this restaurant as part of a group of four on the recommendation of a friend. He knew of my enthusiasm for seafood and he also knew that I expected the place to be rather special given his track record with several previous successful restaurant recommendations. I wasn't disappointed. On top of helpful, efficient and professional service, and delightful views of the ria, the seafood and fish were exceptional. We had a wide range of dishes and all were extremely fresh, tasty and beautifully cooked. I was lucky enough to be served the best navajas (razor clams and berberechos (cockles (I think! that I've ever had. (It appealed to me that one of the waiters was almost apologetic that local zamborinas (scallops were not available before explaining that they had others from more distant shores. We weren't put off. We ordered a couple of plates and they were as good as any I've ever had . If you want the freshest of fresh seafood and fish (with the service and outlook to go with it you'd be well advised to make a beeline for this restaurant.
We were staying in Freixo and decided to try Pepe do Coxo. Loved having a beer and tasting the fresh flavors. The navajas were excellent!
This bar/restaurant has a lovely atmosphere about it. Plenty of diners and locals in for a drink and a chat. Situated on the edge of the harbour there is a nice outlook. The menu is in both Spanish English the young helpful waiter can also speak English so no communication problems. Plenty of choice on the menu-small tapas style dishes as well as full meals. We ate here twice in a week. We really liked the pork loin; Cooked with garlic I think paprika it was presented with chips. I tried the hake; 2 large pieces simply grilled and well seasoned. It was accompanied by boiled potatoes courgette. The portions were very generous all the food was tasty. We shared a large mixed salad too. A desert of tiramisu was also very good. Total bill for 2 mains, a salad 1 desert (without drinks) was less than 40€. Fantastic value.
We had a dinner in Pepe do Coxo with friends. Ordered different clams as a starter and it was extremely fresh and well cooked, then we had grilled fish which was excellent. I would recommend this restaurant for all see food (especially all type of clams) lovers. We will be back!
