Tucked away just off the main road, the Smithfield Hotel offers a blend of charm and nostalgia with its simple, dated decor and welcoming atmosphere. Guests rave about the delicious food, highlighting dishes like baked camembert, scallops, and a fantastic Sunday roast. The spacious dining area provides a relaxed setting, complemented by friendly, albeit youthful, staff. With a solid selection of beers and wines, it's ideal for those seeking a casual yet fulfilling meal. Though the hotel’s age shows, and some service could be improved, the overall experience leaves patrons eager to return, making it a worthy stop in Orkney.

Was Anonym at Smithfield a mag?
Whenever my wife and I visit family in Dounby we dine in this excellent restaurant. On Sunday they do a first class and very tasty Roast Beef lunch with all the trimmings. A very good selection of beers and wines are on offer. Service is very good and their prices are very reasonable indeed. Should you be in Orkney on vacation or for any other reason, I recommend that you dine in this splendid restaurant. View all feedback.
What Revatron dislikes about Smithfield:
We popped in for lunch and the place was empty which was nice as we had the cafe porch to ourselves. Service was good but the menu is strange. The orkney steak burrito is NOT a burrito. It is a wrap, served mildly warm but (certainly not hot) with a side salad and crisps. A burrito is a flour or corn tortilla wrapped around beef/chicken, rice, cheese, avocado, sour cream etc. Don’t be fooled by this if you actually w... View all feedback.
We went to this restaurant for dinner twice during the week, and both times the staff were very friendly. There was a good selection of food, and everything we tried tasted great. Definitely worth checking out.
Met for a girls catch up evening. Food was excellent, staff very friendly and price very reasonable. I am generally a meat eater, but went for the veg option….carrot and walnut fritters with parsnip sauce, absolutely delicious. Everyone enjoyed their deserts, lovely sticky toffee pudding.
We came here due to the great recommendations we have had. However it wasn 't the best experience. The place is somewhat dated, but pleasant enough. Starters were soup, and cheese and chutney, both quite nice. The mains were chicken, and beef in red wine. However the potatoes with the beef were undercooked easily noticed when the fork doesn 't even go half way in. The carrots to were undercooked not even al dente. My wife had a load of chips so we weren 't stuck for veg, but surprisingly the waitress never at any point asked how it was, until she came to take the plates away. We pointed out that we had had ample veg, but did expect something more of an apology than just 'Oh sorry '. A gesture like a free coffee or a small deduction would have been a positive get out for the restaurant instead of be leaving with a negative vibe. The pudding which we shared was quite nice. The total cost £51 would have been a very fair price had the vegetables been cooked properly. With so many good eateries around, i am not sure if we would return.
I discovered this gem of a restaurant, especially on Mondays. The staff gave us a warm welcome and the lunch menu was delicious. I highly recommend trying the scara bray burger or the scallops. They also offer a variety of dairy and gluten-free options.
This review is for a somewhat secluded and outdated pub and hotel. While we did not stay overnight, we did have a drink in the bar. The staff were friendly enough and the bar had a pool table, two darts boards, and simple furniture. The seating included nice old church pews. There is plenty of parking available at the back of the establishment and it is located just off the main road.
