If you want to mingle with some suspicious locals this is the place for you, but don't expect good food. Dinner doesn't start until 8:00 but the locals pack the place for drinks and tapas. The servers were very friendly and helpful, and there is no English menu, so we were surprised to receive for dinner dishes such as a thin beef steak, french fries and two fried eggs.
Have been coming here for some time. The proprietors are good with foreigners and the roasted peppers with salt are the best. This time we ate at tables in the street.
Me and my friend tried some traditional food: patata bravas (potatoes with sauce), spicy peppers, tortilla with mushrooms. All very good. Great red beer. The place is a confortable taberna, where you can watch football, talk with people, have a glass of wine, and so on. You can stay outside, there is space, without cars.
Bar Galicia is a local bar that is open to foreigners. The fish dish (cod) was good and the service was friendly, more than average in Oñati. The pintxos are supposed to be very good, but we did not try them.
It is my second time back in Onati after a three year break, Bar Galicia is still the most friendly family run bar with Tapas style home cooked food that is first rate. A must on the menu is the local Jambon platter which in my opinion is the best I have had anywhere in Soain, I assure you the home cooked menu and friendly staff, will bring you back whenever you are in Onati.
