Contribute Feedback What Pierre Marx likes about Al Castagno:
Were there spontaneously one week ago on a trip. Got a table right away. Goods very satisfied, very good prices, ingredients are not saved and super nice condition. Can only be recommended. View all feedback.
What Heiner Albers doesn't like about Al Castagno:
Pasta war verkocht oder war vor Tagen, schmeckt wie.... nichts. Pizza war zu bitter, verbrannt Paar Schinken sonst nichts. Wir haben beschwert, bekommen wir ein böse Gesicht von der Schef. Es gilbt mehre Italienische Lokal im Dorf, kann bessere Pizza essen und nette Personal, wir kommen nie wieder. View all feedback.
Visited here as recommended by our hotel.Decided to sit outside, which is a covered seating area holding about 5 or 6 tables, fairly close together.Started with a very consommé type Vegetable soup, even had sprouts in!This was ok but not the Minestrone type soup one is used to.Pizza, chorizo and cream was ok.As a non-smoker it was a shame we chose a night where the rest seemed to be smokers. It is also a shame that non smokers can't enjoy eating outside without having to inhale secondary expelled nicotine fumes! To compound this parents were oblivious to their children almost shouting in what is quite a confined area.
Been here half a dozen times in a large group in various visits and has normally been good - good for the atmosphere rather than for the food. But last night was a let down. The waiter was grumpy - I know German waiters are efficient rather than warm and welcoming on the whole, but this one was definitely on the grumpy side and seemed like he was tolerating us rather than making any effort to make sure everything was OK. He finally sorted out our order, but still a few disappointments to come. I ordered the avocado and prawns, which turned out to be lettuce and prawns, their standard prawn cocktail. On the plus side it was a generous helping of prawns, but that wasn't what I ordered. I called Mr Happy over to ask about it, he consulted the menu (just in case I'd imagined it I suppose), then muttered something about the chef and left it at that. And the second carafe of white wine was close to undrinkable (but not so close that we didn't drink it!). Mentioned it to him, and he brought in the bottle it allegedly came from saying it was the same wine - but it most definitely wasn't. Had the usual pizza al castagno, with rocket, Parma ham and parmesan. Generous helpings of ham and Parmesan, but the centre of the pizza was a bit soggy, as if not quite cooked. All in all a bit of a disappointment, which could so easily have been avoided by a more helpful waiter (who I'm guessing doesn't rely on tips to supplement his wages) and just a little more attention all round. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say it's not always like this, but on last night's showing it's not worth more than 2/5.
Lucky enough to have found space at this small restaurant to eat dinner. Service very attentive, food and wine excellent. Would highly recommend.
This is the first restaurant I've ever been to that I wonder if there isn't some sort of concerted effort to push it down in the rankings? It is #19 as I write this...it should be in the top 5. We went to another Italian restaurant in town earlier in the week, and while it was fine, it was nowhere near as good as this! All of the dishes, from pasta, to pizza, to veal saltimbocca were amazing! There was clearly a lot of thought that went into them...the pasta with clams was not just pasta with clams thrown in. The presentation and flavor were very well done. The house wine was quite good (red), and inexpensive.
