This is a highly rated "hole in the wall" sushi restaurant. i only call it that cuz it's tiny and easily missed. the sushi here is the best i've had in the lower mainland. very fresh fish and prepared perfectly. the menu is huge with lots of interesting foods to try, both raw and cooked. great place! I have been to this fantastic restaurant around twelve times. I keep returning because of the high-quality sushi and excellent service. However, my experience was tainted by a surprising incident that led to the title of my review, “Shocked.” While sitting at the sushi bar, I witnessed one of the chefs drink water from his hands and then proceed to spit it out into the sink repeatedly. We are regulars there, at least once a week! try to go Thurs, when they fly fish from Japan! amazing quality and great staffs! Hands down best sushi we had so far!
Hadn't been to Hamaei in a few years after several good experiences in the past. Never minded the cramped and odd quarters in the past as the food and service were always good.Visited last week and was most disappointed. I noticed Atlantic salmon on most dishes.... cat food in other words. When I ordered the Hama assorted sushi, I asked if it had Atlantic salmon and was informed that replacing the one piece of Atlantic salmon with Sockeye salmon would involve an additional charge. Two problems here. First, if there is only one piece of salmon on this dish, why would you use Atlantic salmon.... to save 10 cents in product cost? Second, the server should realize that having a such a product included on such a menu item should be a source of shame and should be gladly replaced. So many better sushi bars around..... definitely won't return.
We like going out for dinner most Friday nights - it's our date night and has been for over 5 years now. It's either Sushi or Italian or Pho - but mostly sushi at Hamaei especially if it was pay day. Yes, there are cheaper places but not as nice with sushi chefs who just cut fresh fish - simple, non? After all, a nice bottle of premium sake to accompany is a must!We sat up at the sushi bar this time and I don't know if that made the food taste better as we watched it being prepared or if it was just 8:30 and we were hungry! Probably both...We always have Wild Sockeye Sashimi and we tried the Spicy Tuna Sashimi bowl by accident and it was amazing. But we always seem to miss getting there in time for the toro. And Yellowfin isn't as good - or so I've been told.Sure, there are designer rolls from other more contemporary places but if you want basic sushi specialties including nigiri or noodles in a comfy casual setting with free parking, free smiles, and where you can actually hear your own conversation (even the next table's conversation), then you should check this out for your next date night!
Stopped in for a quick lunch and really enjoyed the sashimi and tempura bento box. Service is always good and food is always great.
