Howard's Chowder Shack - North Scituate
Howard's Chowder Shack
Description
Nestled alongside the road, this seafood spot has become a real contradiction in diners' experiences. While some rave about the generous portions of fried clams and flavorful fish sandwiches, others express disappointment over cold, undercooked dishes and service hiccups. Patrons appreciate the attentive staff and quick service, with friendly phone interactions enhancing takeout orders. Despite the mixed reviews, the essence of a classic seaside eatery shines through, featuring highlights such as clam cakes and chowder. With fair prices and a welcoming atmosphere, this restaurant may draw returning guests, but consistency in quality remains essential for lasting success.

We opted for fried clams and a fish sandwich. The clam strips were generously portioned, tender, and flavorful without being overly greasy. The fries were also delicious. As for the fish sandwich, it featured a thick fillet of cod that was enormous, flaky, and perfectly battered. It was substantial enough to easily be shared between two buns. We're looking forward to returning to try more items from the menu!
The sodas were practically warm, and the service was terrible; the woman at the counter was not very friendly to customers. The dough boy was, without a doubt, the worst I've ever had, and it tasted like fish. Additionally, they had a sign advertising lobster rolls, but they were sold out. They should remove the sign, as that was the main reason I stopped in. To make matters worse, they were also out of chicken and napkins!
I used to live nearby and always enjoyed their clamcakes. I stopped in recently to grab some of my favorites, but they were nothing like I remembered. The clamcakes I loved were large, packed with clams, flavorful, and not greasy at all. What I got this time were balls of batter that were so saturated in oil that I couldn't even pick them up without getting my hands covered in grease, let alone eat them. The bisque was decent and creamy, but it didn't have any lobster meat in it. Please bring back the old recipe, even if it means charging a little more.
