Reviews summary

Nestled in a modern, intimate setting, the restaurant offers a unique blend of culinary creativity and top-notch service. While some dishes like the Brussels sprouts and seafood impressed diners, others, such as the main courses and desserts, evoked mixed responses. Cocktails like the Jubilee and Downtown Revival received high praise for their refreshing taste. The ambiance, often described as an industrial chic vibe, enhances the overall dining experience. Though some patrons felt the prices were steep for certain offerings, many left content with exceptional service and gourmet selections, solidifying the establishment as a favorite for special occasions and casual outings alike.

My review cannot do enough justice for this place. Went with a group of friends and ordered almost everything, sharing with each other. Everything was amazing! My favorites and must try were the pimento cheese spread, and brussel sprouts for appetizers. Formain dishes, the ribeye was cooked perfectly and just melted in your mouth. The burger is easily in the top 5 best burgers I'veever had. The chicken was moist and oh so good! Go eat here, you will not be disappointed!!

My husband found this place from inspecting their kitchen hood. He said they had the cleanest hood and kitchen he has seen in the Hampton Roads and wanted to try it out. I made reservations on the Resy app. Upon first impression the place is verymodern, clean, cute, small and intimate. We were sat down instantly upon arrival. Our waitress was Stephanie. She was so sweetand personable. She recommended a really delicious drink called the Jubilee. First we ordered oysters. When it first came out Iliked the presentation but a little sad there were only 3 for $9. However it was probably the best oysters ever. Whatever saucewas on it was sooo delicious. Then for dinner my husband and I ordered Rock Fish. We scrapped the plate, it was THAT good. Toend off dinner we ordered desserts. Olive Oil cake with lemon flavored icing which doesn't sound good but was to die for!!!!! Myhusband enjoyed his Pots Du Creme, rich in chocolate. Overall amazing service. Nice intimate atmosphere. Drinks on point. Foodcame out quick and soooo mouth watering. Definitely a 5 star experience!

Best dining experience of my life. And we eat at a lot of restaurants. Service was PHENOMENAL. She made great recommendations and asked all the right questions to help us find the perfect dish. We started with the Brussels sprout appetizer. It was so wegood we ordered another one. DO NOT sleep on the Brussels. I had the downtown revival cocktail- slightly sweet&sour and veryrefreshing. My husband had the old fashioned and loved it. He ordered the crab cakes which was a special the night we went andthey were incredible. I had the duck. It came with a vegetable medley and sweet potato soufflé. It was so tender and wellflavored. I savored every bite. It was food heaven. As for overall experience- the restaurant is well designed and styled. Wewent in the evening and the low light made for an intimate feel. Even the bathrooms were immaculate with a modern feel and greatsmelling candles lit. If you’re in the area, it’s a must.

Ordered quite a few things off the menu. The fresh oysters were amazing and the anchovies and ham. The carrots and the cauliflower were really good. However the main courses left a lot to be desired. The a steak was cold and the duck was sub-par.However the sticky toffee was amazing.

Excellent food. Excellent vibe. Dining here makes me forget I’m in Norfolk. Feels like a trendy Chicago or NYC dive. The Island Old Fashioned is delightfully light and pleasant. The BEST Brussels sprouts I’ve ever eaten.Hopefully some different dessert options in the future. The chef is fantastic and I look forward to new items!

Amazing place for a casual vibe and outstanding food. I took my wife for dinner before a show at Chrysler Hall and they did a great job. Started with the pimento cheese and followed with the rockfish and the rib eye. Everything was cooked absolutely perfect, flavors were amazing, and the service was quick. I hope to visit again soon. Thank you!

Pork shoulder was just a pile of pulled pork pressed into a block. In the past it was an intact pork shoulder. Nothing was noted on the menu to show the change. This was easily the most expensive pulled pork bbq Ive ever had. The chicken liver tart was nice. Ambiance was lacking the staff brought out crates of dishes and silverware and cleaned them near by while we ate.

Codex has quickly become one of our favorite date night spots in a town ripe with great food. Many of the small plates—BRUSSEL SPROUTS (arguably best item on the menu), cocktails (downtown revival and service are unmatched. Grateful for another thriving restaurant post pandemic ?
