A great place for seafood..arguably the best in town. The platters are great value..and superbly cooked. The only down side is the high tables relative to the chairs and the fact that they are fixed inbplace.Fully licenced in a great location alonf the harbour side. View all feedback.
What Brannon Casper doesn't like about Salty Squid:
DO NOT EAT HERE!!! Poor service, slow to serve customers and once served rude. The food is frozen fish, and cold chips, you could forgive frozen fish if the serving size was decent but no. Really disappointed when you can see the water, and less than a kilometre away there is a fish coop!! Read the reviews on TripAdvisor and thought it can't be that bad. Well, it can. Will never return. View all feedback.
I came here by chance a few years back and had an amazing whole BBQ schnapper. Great value, well cooked and memorable. I came back a few times and it was still good but over time it has become more expensive and the quality has deteriorated. The seafood platter is mostly chips and deep fried bits and pieces and the lobster my wife ordered was just awful and very expensive. I hope they reverse this trend because I like coming here but it seems from other reviewers that it is throwing away a promising start.
If you are into seafood Salty Squid is a must visit if you are in Newcastle. The seafood platters are grea
I like coming here as the grilled whole fish and fillets are generally great and the salt and pepper squid also great. The fried dishes are generally pretty average and filled out with chips. It's not a venue with table service but food is usually promptly delivered. Prices have risen over the lasy year or so but still good value. We had some lobster that was overcooked and small but i recommend staying with the grilled fish options.
Terrific seafood at reasonable rates - I know people who eat here every week in summer because its open, light and right over the beautiful Newcastle Harbour. We share a meal sometimes because they are big serves and the ice creamery is nearby for desert. You can take your own wine - white is recommended because you'll love the calamari, the seafood platter or the fish of the day grilled or fried. You can go there after a day at the beach and not feel underdressed but you can also make it an event with friends - lunch or dinner. A pleasant experience either way
