Subterra A Wine Cellar
4.3 / 5 (3814 reviews)

Description

Sub Terra is garnering attention for its unique atmosphere and attentive service, but recent visits reveal a concerning trend with its culinary offerings. While some diners rave about the well-cooked dishes and strong wine selection, others report overly salty entrees and lukewarm plates. Signature items, such as scallops and polenta cakes, left some guests unimpressed, and service inconsistencies have been noted. Despite the charming setting—hidden from the main road—patrons are divided on whether the food justifies the price. While it shows promise, diners may want to tread carefully as the restaurant finds its footing under new ownership.

Today, I visited this restaurant with a friend and we decided to try three appetizers and two entrees based on the waiter's recommendation. The standout among the appetizers was the beef marrow, although some of the bones had little marrow. The prawns were fresh but the sauce was too sweet for their delicate flavor. Surprisingly, one of the highlights of the meal was the bread. Moving on to the entrees, the scallops were salty and the beef shank was average. While the presentation of the dishes was meticulous and fancy, some didn't quite hit the mark for my taste. The service and atmosphere of the restaurant were great, but you may want to consider if the cost is justified for your personal preferences.

The food was underwhelming at this restaurant. The main dish only had three scallops, which cost $41, and they were overly salty. The appetizer only had three prawns with a mediocre sauce. The bone marrow was the standout dish of the four we ordered. Overall, while it may be worth a visit for special occasions, the food could use some improvement. Service: Dine in.

The food at this restaurant is superb, and the service is well-timed. The minimalist and elegant decor is not pretentious at all. The wait staff is extremely helpful. However, be aware that Google Maps may lead you astray when trying to locate the restaurant. Access is actually from 99W/Hancock St, heading southwest through town, not off of Villa Rd. Wheelchair accessibility is available with an ADA compliant entrance at the back of the restaurant, with a nearby parking space (unmarked). It is recommended to call in advance to arrange this access.

Great service, good ambiance. Food a hit and miss. Drinks, salad, fish dish great. New York steak not close to medium request. Recooked and still really bad. No taste so they hid with herb butter sauce. Absolutely should not be on the menu for $49. Ifyou go there, order something else.

A little difficult to find. Don't just rely on Google Maps to get you here. Call the restaurant for directions. Upscale, creative menu. Many wines to pair with. Prawn appetizer was excellent. Lemon chiffon cake dessert was sublime. Service isfriendly and attentive. The atmosphere/ambiance is stark. Needs a little more warmth in decor.
