What Bruce Frank doesn't like about The Old Country:
have no competition. It was not busy but order was 35 minutes. Food was hot but like under heatlamp hot and overcooked. Not impressed lately. We have had better experiences there in the past. View all feedback.
If you are ever in New Hamburg (on your way to Stratford) and want a great meal, try this restaurant. You will not be disappointed. The wait staff were also wonderful. Go ahead and treat yourself.
I had lunch at this restaurant on a very cold and snowy day. We chose a table near the door because we had a friend with a broken ankle and walker. The waitress was friendly and told us about the specials of the day. Two of us ordered the special, while I chose something from the menu. The restaurant was quite busy and a small line started to form while we were there. Whenever the front door opened, our table would get hit with cold air. I went to use the restroom located at the back of the restaurant, where it was freezing. On my way back to the table, I noticed that the portions were generous and the food looked appetizing. I had to order a hot tea to warm up when I returned to the table. The barley soup special arrived first, but it wasn't as hot and thick as I had hoped. It had a nice beefy flavor but was too thin. The others enjoyed their specials. However, my poutine had some issues – the fries were warm but not hot, the cheese curds were ice cold, and the gravy was hot. Although the flavor was good, I didn't enjoy it as much because I prefer melty hot curds. The restaurant looked outdated and seemed to be popular among locals. Street parking was available.
I just came here for a quick breakfast...and it was served very quickly. What I liked about this place is the portion is not overly large, but still gets you full. Also, the food wasn't salty or greasy in my opinion. The waiter was friendly and attentive for the most part. I would come back for breakfast. They do have other options.
The restaurant has undergone recent renovations, both inside and out, and the decor looks much better - cleaner and more modern. The food quality has also improved with a revamped menu. The quality and quantity of the food are exceptional, and the prices are very fair. The daily specials are superb. They make their own fries, which are perfect - crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and full of flavor. The service is always friendly and attentive. Overall, it's a great place to eat.
Great small town, home cooked meals at a reasonable price. Generous portions with a nice selection on the menu. They also offer Stone Hammer beer one of my personal favourites! I recommend the banquet burger or their schnitzel. Absolutely delicious!
