What Emmanuelle Lemaire doesn't like about Vallon de Gayet:
We had to wait for a very long time to get our meat, it was really high quality but did not compensate the forty five minutes or so spent waiting. We were indeed a fairly large group, made of more than ten people, and the...desserts were also nice, but so much time? View all feedback.
Great steaks over the wood fire, I recommend the Chateau Briande, excellent local wine selection, super staff and the William the owner/host is outstanding!
Our first night in Mouries and not entirely familiarised so took a chance on this place without a reservation. Although in the hotel grounds, the restaurant is in a completely separate building and we were early enough to avoid the well-heeled rush later. Actually, the...staff were perfectly friendly and co-operative and found us a nice table in the impressive natural terrace rather like dining in a tiered woodland glade. Vegetable terrine with cold tomato sauce was an unusual starter but it worked. I was rather more traditional with a fillet au poivre main course. Certainly very peppery, but cooked perfectly..and big. Mrs EPR's brochette (i.e. skewer) of beef and gammon chunks was pronounced good too. Desserts of nougat ice cream, or chocolate mousse both fine. We were looked after by a jocular french girl who spoke english very well; we agreed it was certainly better than my mangled french. The bill was expensive; I wasn't surprised. I paid more rather visual attention as we left and was thus able to commend the chef as he hurled hunks of meat on the vast grill that I hadn't noticed when I first arrived. Definitely a place for serious carnivores.

This is a place for meat. The vertical BBQ produces. Long-term staff know how to present a steak. Some of us want something between rare and well done. Between saignant et à point. Ask and you'll get medium rare. Staff is good. The hosts are...wonderful. Start in the fireplace check-in bar and move to the restaurant bar to place your order. All will be perfect when you arrive at your table. Enjoy.
