The images are misleading. This restaurant is terrible, it looks very outdated. It may attempt to have a charming, old-world aesthetic, but to me it just appears cheap and in need of significant renovations. The rooms were unpleasant and had a bad smell, the bed was uncomfortable, and the carpet was dirty. The bathroom was poorly designed, with the toilet and sink located too close together. This was easily the worst hotel on the NC500 route. While the exterior of the hotel may seem impressive, I personally dislike shiny, brightly colored bedding as it does not make for a relaxing stay. A bedroom should have warm, neutral tones for a cozy atmosphere.
The exterior of the building is well-maintained and impressive. We stayed for 2 nights and tried different rooms during our stay. The bathrooms were nice with plenty of hot water and a good bath/shower combination. The quality of the rooms varied; some appeared older and in need of some attention, with stains on the carpet and mold around the windows and behind the curtains. The sheets on the beds were acceptable, but the mattresses were not very comfortable. The hotel seemed quiet and in need of some refurbishment, but it has the potential to be great if the décor and overall condition are updated. Better lighting would also improve the ambiance. Overall, our stay was average, with some parts of the hotel blocked off and abandoned, such as the swimming pool and spa area, which appeared neglected. It would have been a nice addition if these facilities were open.
I recently returned from a wonderful weekend at this hotel. Although the room seemed a bit worn in places, overall it was a good value for the money because of its spacious size and a large, comfortable four-poster bed. The staff were all friendly and attentive. The highlight of our stay was the outstanding food at the restaurant. We had dinner there both nights and were thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and service. The restaurant was busy, which is a testament to its excellence. I would highly recommend this hotel for a peaceful and relaxing getaway.
I booked this hotel for two nights as we needed to travel to Elgin at short notice. After reading the reviews I was pretty nervous, but on arrival was pleasantly surprised. We arrived late in the evening (after 11pm but were welcomed and shown to our rooms by a friendly member of staff. Our room (a standard double in the main building was nice, quiet and comfortable with a great shower and comfy bed. It was a bit on the cold side but to be fair the temperature outside was -1. The public parts of the hotel are nice and seemed fairly well maintained. Breakfast on the first morning wasn't that great (cooked stuff was not that good and the milk was off, albeit quickly replaced! , but was much better on the second. All the members of staff that we met were friendly and helpful. There was plenty of parking, the hotel's just a few minutes drive from the centre of Elgin and a couple of minutes walk from a Tesco which was really convenient for us. The hotel is a little old fashioned in parts but for the price we were pleased with our stay and had no complaints.
