Small restaurant with really nice minimalistic interior.Service is superfriendly in french and english :-) We had first some sushi and then different ramen bowls.Sushi were really exquisit, fredh and tasty. What Rashawn Hodkiewicz doesn't like about Marusan Comptoir Japonais:
I am uncertain about this restaurant. Firstly, the music is excessively loud, and it is techno music playing. It is not conducive to enjoying a meal. Additionally, the staff is too friendly and overly attentive, to the point of making some people uncomfortable. As for the food, I ordered the fried chicken, which was supposed to come with rice and a "nice salad" for a little over 15$ including taxes. However, what I r... View all feedback.
A delightful discovery close to our hotel - the unusual Japanese menu is what drew us to check this place out. And though we weren't hungry, all the mouthwatering options just sounded too good to pass up. And they didn't disappoint. Definitely try the Tantan Udon. The sausage appetizer was part of a special menu but maybe they'll make them permanent because it's worth trying! Do the non-fried dishes over the fried ones because the flavors are so rich and worth tasting- don't let the fried dishes kill that off. Definitely go!
However, what I received was 5 small pieces of fried chicken resembling chicken nuggets with dark, slimy meat. The accompanying rice was minimal, and the "nice salad" consisted of just a few wilted arugula leaves and a halved cherry tomato. This disappointing meal did not justify the price. Overall, I believe it is overrated and lacks value and quality.
Living in the Old Port my son wanted to try this place because of it's high google rating. I do love sushi and Japanese cuisine in general but this place more along the lines of pub food Japanese Style. Small appetizer size portions of everything from chicken wings to Sushi. We tried the wings, sushi , tartar, and octopus fried in dough and unfortunately while they were ok and staff almost over friendly we were still hungry afterwards. Perhaps i am too used to more traditional Japanese dishes ....
We decided, at the last minute, not to go to a restaurant that we had planned on in the Notre Dame W area of the old town in Montreal and came upon Marusan Comptoir Japonais. The decor was very modern and equally comfortable. At first we were somewhat reluctant since bar food is seldom what we would choose for dinner, but this reservation was quickly overcome with the pleasant server and even more so once the food began to arrive. Although the menu is not extensive and has a great dal of meat, we worked our way through every vegetable and seafood dish offered and each was more pleasing that that which preceded it.An excellent location for any meal!ATBLIG
