I absolutely love this place! It’s a fantastic spot for a day trip that transports you back in time. You can enjoy a wonderful lunch and pick up some local treats like sweets, breads, and fresh staples for your pantry. The staff is incredibly friendly too. Can’t wait to visit again soon! What Nathalie K doesn't like about Monterey General Store:
I had a disappointing experience with the customer service at this restaurant. While the selection of items is decent, it's nothing out of the ordinary. The staff running the place were quite rude. If you're not a local, I recommend driving an extra 20 minutes to Guidos for a better selection and a friendlier atmosphere. View all feedback.
Private. Secluded and very quiet, possibly my favorite place on earth. If you were to die and go to heaven you would end up at Monterey General Store. Great food, the place has an extremely sophisticated menu with organic and vegetarian sandwiches and salads. There are a lot of country items like homemade pies and specialty jams and spreads that are really cute and make nice gifts. Great coffee.
Sandwiches are very inconsistent and thin on the meat for the price. I called to let them know and could not have cared. I guess that is the attitude when your the only option for miles.
I never liked this place since the day it reopened. This place was always a General Store in a small little town in the Berkshires with a little of everything including a smile. Nowadays, it has become, or might I say trying to become, a snooty overpriced trendy cafe of sorts. The previous general store was for everyone in the community, locals now can't afford it nor can they stand and wait 20 minutes for a sandwich. I know it is struggling, but hey, the writing is on the wall. The coffee is worse than horrible. They lie and say that there bread was made this morning when it can be up to a week old and refrigerated. Etc... I want to have a general store in Monterey as much as everyone else but I for one just drive right by and go into Great Barrington.
This is a charming and enjoyable place! Delicious sandwiches, soup, baked goods and coffee. A must visit if you are in the Berkshires!
Pulled up here expecting to walk into a hardware store and an old deli. What a surprise. They have struck a perfect balance of what should be in a small town like Monterey (seriously it only has the Post Office and this General Store) and what is needed/desired like a small selection of higher quality groceries (pasta sauces, pastas, and other side items) along with a nice restaurant. They even have a cheese case. The restaurant in the back overlooks the Konkapot River so it has some nice views. I had a smoked turkey sandwich (with claims that the turkey is from a local farm) on toasted sourdough bread with grainy mustard and some lettuce and tomato. It was served with a small green side salad. Had a hot tea on this rainy cold day and it was perfect.
